How to get to 2002 spec?
Hey gang,
I'm new to these forums but I've wanted an RX-7 FD3S for years. Is it really hard to get a car set up like the 2002 JDM Spirit R, mechanically? I'm not actually worried about the body, wheels, interior, as a replica etc. so much as the engine, electronics, and suspension parts.
Did they make any major changes to the frame or hardware from 1993 to 2002? I know that they upgraded the turbos, engine management, etc. incrementally, but I'm just trying to get a top-down perspective on the magnitude of the project.
Thanks,
HiWire

They made a lot of little changes all over the car.
Front end, intake, turbos, brakes, wheels, aero, suspension. ECU went 16-bit and the solenoids were rearranged, so all engine bay wiring is different.
Really the biggest changes are cosmetic. Buy the wing, front end, and wheels and it will look much more like a 99+ than a 93. The performance upgrades are easily exceeded by aftermarket options for less money.

+1, there were lots of little changes mechanically but all of them count for nothing when compared to aftermarket options. I know you said that you don't care if it looks like a 99 spec as long as it performs like one but why do that when you could easily out perform a stock 99 spec for less money? Basically my point is that there's no point in swapping stock parts from a 99 spec to aid in performance

This was my goal for my car. I did alot of research on this and trust me, this is the right answer...
"The performance upgrades are easily exceeded by aftermarket options for less money."
The only thing I can think of that the 2002 has that is better is the upgraded ABS and someone is taking a look at that now. Literally everything else can be upgraded 3rd party. The simplification of the turbo stuff is nice but you can do better if you go single turbo.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick replies. Regarding performance - obviously, aftermarket options will get you more power than 276 HP. I'm also asking about the details because of emissions and efficiency - were any improvements on efficiency made over the life of the FD3S (e.g. ports, seals, cooling, etc.)? I'd like to keep a sequential turbo setup in my car if it is possible.
I'm not particularly obsessed about upgrading a car with JDM parts, but I was wondering if it is considered a particularly good balance of performance for a street/track car. I'd most likely take the car road racing rather than autocross/drift/drag.
This is the car that I'm currently looking at upgrading - it's selling at a suspiciously low price, though:

What do you guys think?

Sorry, but is fake. Theyve been posting that car on Craigslist. When you email them, they will tell you the car is located somewhere far away, and that they will set up something and have the car shipped to you.
Heres the craigslist ad that was local to me. I flagged it, but they still havent taken it down.

Unless of course someone is just ripping his ad off. If you see the car in person, then Id say it might be legit.

Thanks, Jeff. I won't bother checking it out... it looks totally bogus.

I saw and figured that it couldn't be real, but thought maybe I could get a could deal from someone that didn't know what they had. They emailed me back that the car was in Montana and that they would set up shipping after I paid through ebay vehicle purchase protection. So I told em that I lived in Montana and there would be no need to ship, just let me know when I could come look at the car, just to mess with em. They never replied.

BTW, I just join RX-7 Forum...nice to meet you and Everyone here.
Though I don't have an RX-7, I am certainly looking for one like HiWire...a proud new owner of an FD3S!
I am a car nut too...so I can help out too as I read a lot about RX-7s!
