Help with Stereo
So I just sold my honda but I got to keep my headunit. I'm looking at an RX-7 where the owner is willing to remove his aftermarket headunit to lower the price since I already have one. I found the wiring diagram in the FAQ but I don't really know what to make of it, my radio just has this big plug with a bunch of wires coming out of the back that pluged right into my honda, would it be the same for the 7? I'm guessing its not because that would be too easy. I'm pretty novice at wiring, so if I'm about to start a 6 hour road trip to drive the car home I'd like to avoid spending two hours at the start trying to get the radio working. My head unit is a decent Kenwood unit that I bought new over the summer. Thanks a lot.

Radio Wiring
Well honestly you would be surprised how many car steros wire the same way.. and the good thing is the RX7 is no different... Ok so on the back of your head unit you have a wiring harness... Here is you most common Color code
Black - Ground
Red - Aux. Power (Makes the unit turn on with the turn of the key)
Yellow - Constant Power (Keeps the clock and presets in the unit at all times.)
Blue - Amp On Switch
Blue/White - Power antenna
On more expensive head units
Orange - Illumination (Dims the deck when you dim your dash lights)
Pink/Brown - For indash units.. This need to be wired to your parking break so you cannot drive and watch T.V., you can rewire this or even buy a bypass switch to do as you please but it may be illegal in your state so be cautious
(Note: THESE ARE JUST COMMON COLORS YOUR MAY BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT)
Then you probably have a couple different pairs of wires...
Gray/Gray Black
Green/Green Black
White/White Black
Purple/Purple Black
If I remember right I think White is driver front Gray is passanger front, Green is pasanger rear, and purple is driver rear speakers... but you will have to test it if there is no technical bullitin present...
Now you can do One of two thinngs.. You can buy a wiring harness for your car or hard wire in all your connections. It had a prior unit so you can probaby guess it already has a harness in it. (The car harness just makes it easier so you dont have to sit there and play with every wire until you find the right set...make a 30 min job a 2 hour job.....
With the harness all you have to do is match the colors... yup that easy just make your connections nice and tight and I would say you beanie connectors because they hold very strong.. but that is your choice

If you want to play with each wire till you find the right set feel free... just be cautious to make sure your connections and wire hook ups are correct.. you will easily get a winding noise in your speakers from a loose or touching ground wire...but that is true bor wire harness or no wire harness....
Hopefully this helps.. If you have anyquestions just repost or reply and I can help.. I did it professionaly for years...lol
