KY got a new afm and still wont stay running

ok. got a 1991 convert. i bought me a new afm and it works. just the engine wont stay running with it. still have to hold it open for it to run correctly. if i dont then the engine floods. could i have a leakin injector or could the tps or something else be causing it. i just need some point in the general direction to start looking. i dont know a thing bout these cars and dont want to just start taking things apart. oh. and about the car. i bought it from someone who couldnt even get the car running. ive at least made it farther then him. the main cat has been cut out and it looks like a tube or something was cut off also. im guessin where the air pump is suppose to be was taken out or broke off. remember reading bout it opening up some ports or something. other then that i have no idea bout the car.

Jump the yellow (at least I think it's still yellow on S5s) test connector near the passenger shock tower. This will bypass the AFM fuel cut switch and allow the fuel pump to run whenever the key is 'ON'. If the engine idles like this, the AFM has a bad switch (which means replacing the whole thing).

Does the engine idle at all with the AFM left alone? What RPM does it sit at? Does it die outright, or just get rough and stall from low RPMs? Is the check engine light coming on? If so, pull codes: http://www.johnr.com/cpucodes.html.

Flooding is unlikely to be the problem, but rather something that happens because it stalled. Hot start problems can be common in these cars. Most of the time it's just because of excessively rich fuel start maps, but occasionally leaky injectors can be to blame.

Also, the air pump should never be removed from S5 NA cars. The pump allows the auxiliary ports (#5 & 6 intake ports) & VDI (variable dynamic intake) valve to function. If they're disabled, the engine will be down a LOT of power (to the tune of ~40hp). Questions about this pop up a lot in the section, and you'll find many threads in the 2nd gen section. Something to think about once the engine decides to idle properly .

New as in brand new OEM from Mazda? A used AFM is not guaranteed to work properly. The FSM has testing procedures for the outputs on AFMs. Start there, pull codes, and try what I suggested.
