Going single turbo question

I have a stock 93 fd rx7 and I was told pick a turbo then build around it. Now I've read ALOT of different threads in this topic but when it comes to turbos I'm just like ??? What my goals pretty much are is 400hp, quick spool, and I don't want to have to run extremely high boost. I was looking into the Garrett GTX30R turbo but I haven't found anyone that's running that on the fd. If I can get some input on ideas and what do you guys think? (I'm still a newbie on the fd and turbos so take it easy guys lol) thanks!

Let's see if I can give you a "learning too,and this is what I went through..so far" approach.

In the beginning:stock Turbo engine.
Want to Upgrade.More Power Captain..yeehah..PSSHH!
hmmm..Turbo>?., Decent brand,good powerband,good spool,..Price?.Whatever,I want power.
HOW am I gonna Control that Power? What do I need?
Fuel Injection system to give the engine more fuel.Upgraded pump,Injectors, regulator,Lines if you wish to re-do them,New Rails if you go Top feed.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM..definitely as that old 90's ECU is not meant to handle any other Crap I put on the car. It's not meant for it,it is a door stop now.
So that means forking out another 800-2000 on an ECU that can control ALL the gadgets I am now putting on.
Boost Conroller.Gotta control that big Snail like like thing that is gonna Spin my Money into the Dark ages!..(But it will make me smile,so it's worth it..lol!
MANIFOLD,that's a must seeing the old one was for 2 little wee snails..I need a BIG freakin T4 based manifold!..I need a Wastegate too...OH!.I need a Downppipe to attach all this new stuff to my Exhaust..I MAY need a new Exhaust too IF I want to squeeze a couple more HP's out of this thing and I don't need emissions.

That's just a Taste..(tried to make it funny instead of "search!")

But look at the Single Turbo section,AI Section, etc, and read some reviews on what others are running.Look at the Build threads to get an idea of what the Support system is for the turbo that the member is using when he is Building his "track monster".
I find the easiest thing is to just sit back and absorb Threads,..thread after thread.
I did it for months.Never did go back to the same one..lol,but I did learn a lot of stuff!
Good luck to ya.

Props to you MisterStyx for giving entertaining yet informative answers.

Anyways, I think entry level turbo for the 13brew is a GT35r, the GTX35r is actually a little ahead, but either one will do the job reliably. It's a very popular turbo and it's what I'm going to use also. It's recommended to use the 1.06 ar if you're getting the T3 and either the .8x or 1.0x AR for the T4 turbo as the T4 will naturally outflow the T3. The whole turbo number thing still slightly confuses me but with enough research you can get most of the important information down.

Best of luck,
Ed.

Concur with the above. The 35r is the Swiss Army Knife of RX-7 turbos. I've seen the 30r compressor give impressive results, but the turbine is too small and restrictive to make it a good choice.

Everyone I personally know does not know a thing about cars so you guys are awesome! My finishing touch will be putting a big "snail sticker" on my car! Lol

The GT35XR is a bit better than the 35R at higher boost, but you won't really see that advantage unless you are running the higher boost. At least not enough to justify the price vs. the standard GT35R anyway, in my opinion.
