Fuel filter relocation
91 convertible - NA
I'm *not* asking where the fuel filter is here, I already know. The thing is that it seems like it's in the most asinine place ever devised by man. I'm seriously considering relocating it to the engine bay. Possibly right on the firewall, top drivers side.
Truth be told, I don't even want to dick with removing the old filter. If I did this, I'd probably just bypass it and let it rest where it is.
Any advice from you more experienced guys on whether that's a good spot or any pitfalls I might be unaware of would be appreciated.
A minor issue I've already come across is that the only mounting bracket I could find (maybe you guys could tell me a better place) was thirty bucks for a small piece of corroded old steel. Methinks I'll just end up making my own bracket for it. I work steel for a living in a factory so fab work isn't an issue for me at all. I'd kinda like an oem part here, but it'll only cost me maybe five dollars to make a new one, including fitting hardware.

The most asinine fuel filter placement is probably what's found in a 3rd gen RX-7. It's above the differential near the fuel tank.
For 2nd gens, I think you'll have trouble finding a suitable location to mount the filter in the engine bay. The brake booster and clutch master take up most of the room in that corner. When I've changed mine, I disconnected the hose at the emissions rack, and then the back side of the filter is relative easy to disconnect from under the car. I think you may be able to re-mount it further down the frame rail (towards the rear of the car) to make it more accessible. You'd just have to be careful that it didn't hang too low and potentially scape on a speed bump, etc...

When I first saw this thread I was thinking "This guy must have an FD". But then I saw it was an FC...Never thought of the filter location as a problem ever before. Easy to access from under the car, comes off with two bolts. For the few times it's accessed, seems about right.
