I can't say if it's "normal" or not, because you guys do things a little different down under. however, I will say unless your rebuild includes something crazy like a full peripheral port and balancing and such, it doesn't sound right.

maybe in Trinidadian dollars?

That sounds like a lot of money, but it's hard to judge without knowing anything about what he's building you. If he's replacing every part with new, then yeah, that price is about right. But if he's just replacing what's bad, no porting, and you are supplying him the already stripped block, then that's about 5K too high.

I just got mine done by RotaryPower in Gardena, CA in November of 2012 and it cost a little over $5.7k US dollars. Apex seals themselves cost $488 for 6.

I built a half bridge reusing all hard seals except apex seals (RA classics) and only spent $600 ish
Using mainly rotary aviation and atkins for parts

I took it all apart an used the fsm to determine what was reusable and went from there

Porting and labor was free because I did it my self. Rotarys are very simple to rebuild compared to piston engines, should give er a go.

Yes, that is normal for a full rebuild on a 3rd Gen engine. You can check pricing on the below link. You can add about 10% to convert to AUD, although Aussie labor costs tend to be lower than the USA.

Here is Rotary Power's link to the services section.
Rotary Power USA!

Here is everything that was done:

Remove and Replace Engine $1600
Standard Engine Assembly $1000
Gasket Set 93-95 $728.90
Apex Seal (2mm) $488.40 (for 6)
Apex Seal spring 2mm $39.60 (for 6)
2mm apex seal spring $43.20 (for 6)
Corner Seal $80.40 (for 12)
HD Corner Seal Spring $43.80 (for 12)
Side Seals $197.88 (for 12)
Side Seal Springs $113.40 (for 12)
Oil Control Rings $374.88 (for 4)
Oil Control O-Rings (inner) $94.80 (for 4)
Oil Control O-Rings (outer) $93.80 (for 4)
Main Oil Seal (Front) $10.60
Main Oil Seal (Rear) $14.78
Water Pump 93-95 $94.95
Thermostat 93-95 $20.79
Radiator Hose (Upper) $29.60
Radiator Hose (Lower) $19.26
Clean and Calibrate Fuel Injectors $114.00 (for 4)
Pulsation Damper 93-95 $165.68
Spark plugs $48.00
Oil, Oil filter, Antifreeze, Grease, Glue, Cleaning supplies, etc $74.95
Water temp sensor $26.79

Subtotal - $5518.46

(california stupid *** sales tax...) Sales Tax (8.75%) - $255.37

Balance Due - $5773.83

The part numbers for all the parts he used are no this sheet that he gave me back. I did some research and there is a few items you can save like $20 on. For example, the fuel pulsation damper. It usually is sold for around $144.50 ( 93-95 Rx7 Pulsation Damper (N3A2-20-180) ), but on here it is listed at 165.68. Not sure if that includes shipping and the labor to replace it, but $20 bucks is $20 bucks. Or another one, the gasket set is usually sold for around $550.00 ( 93-95 Rx7 Engine Gasket Kit (8DFE-10-271) ) and on here it is $728.90. So if you feel confident doing the rebuild yourself, go for it dude. Just removal and re-installation of my engine was 1600. I'd estimate you can save about $2500-$3000 doing it yourself if you had to replace all the stuff that I had.

Oh dude I know. Trust me, I looked not too long ago and have been beating myself up ever since. The only reason I did it through Rotary Power was because the previous owner used them with the first rebuild and I figured they'd give me some sort of loyalty discount or something, not to mention I had quite a bit of money saved up from my deployment to Afghanistan. But nope, nothing. I kind of regret it, but at the same time it was either rebuild or LS motor. LS route would have been more expensive.
