Coolant temp sensor - How to splice?

I bought a new coolant temperature sensor and the wire connector. I'm kind of confused as to how to approach this. My old coolant temperature sensor connector has only one wire, but the new one has two.

I only came up with two options...
  1. Cut a bit of the insulation off of the two white wires then twist them together. That'll be "one" wire attached to one end of the butt connector.
  2. Attach only one white wire to one end of the butt connector, then use the other white wire as a ground?

This is the old wire that's going to be attached to one end of the butt connector.

Do any of these options sound right to be doing, or am I approaching this the wrong way?

NO.
That is the LOW level coolant sensor.
You are attempting to use a SENDER as a SENSOR.
2 things are gonna happen here,..but ONE is that it will NOT work.
Go to Mazda and get the Correct SENSOR..it's 18 bucks.

I think I meant low level coolant sensor, yeah, low level.

The reason being is because the "low coolant" light keeps buzzing. I know for sure there's no air in the system. I drove it around and kept an eye on my temp gauge. I know the stock gauges are faulty, but for now, it showed no signs nor did anything happen whilst driving. I'll be getting an aftermarket gauge ASAP just to double check.

But like I said, the buzzer keeps buzzing because the connection between that sensor and the wire got cut off.

see that wire that broke off?
strip it back a bit and put the wire under a bolt on the body of the car, tighten bolt..Voila...!
That will stop the buzzing..BUT then again you will not know IF your coolant is low.
SO,if you value the Engine get that 18 dollar part..small price to pay instead of a rebuild.

Mind redirecting me to what the part may look like? We only have 2 Mazda dealerships, both not likely to have it in stock.

I actually want to replace the part/find a fix so that it actually works.

I live in the province of Manitoba.

I can only give you the S4 Part number.
That is 8553-15-610B.and the small rubber grommet under it,which is 8553-15-611.
Now,I think the only difference in year,is the Connector. One is spade type and the other is Bullet type connector.
I tried getting the s5 part number but my glasses do not see that small!!!( I used the BOOK that I have on s4 parts.)

This is it.
89-92 Rx7 Water Level Sensor (N337-15-610)

Any idea what the part number for the other wire is?

The brown one in this pic with the other connector. I may as well get that replaced.

The brown wire will cost you about 600
bucks..lol..as it is part of the engine harness.
... Yes that is the part and number.
Why not call your Mazda dealer, quote that "N" number and see if they can get you one local..that would save you shipping.
Another alternative would be a used sensor with intact wire that you can place a WTB thread in the classifieds for.
I "may Have" an extra one,but it will take me a couple days to get at.

So what if the black connector and the brown wire were separated? Would I have to replace the whole harness or can it be soldered, etc?

You can fix just about anything on a wiring harness- the question becomes how much effort you're willing to put into it.

Get the right part, plug it in, and see if it works. Then we can worry about the harness side of the connection- but the two easiest ways to do it would be getting another connector and replacing it, or if you're willing to shell out money for a handy-dandy pin kit, you can actually replace and reconnect the wires inside the plastic.

Neither one is as simple as bolting on the right sensor and plugging it in.

As soon as you disconnect that sensor it is just that..disconnected,whether you take the sensor off or cut or break the wire anywhere.it is not hooked to anything anymore so it is just a Wire from the ECU going nowhere.
The reason that connector is there is because the sensor is not part of the Engine harness.Just like the engine is not included when you buy an engine harness..lol!..and since there are different harnesses for the Fc they have different Sensor connectors..
NOW,if you happen to get a Sensor that has the wrong connector, then it is STILL OK,as you can crimp on the appropriate connector OR cut and splice to connect the two wires together. It depends on how handy you are.
