Clutch not disengaging ! Please Help !
Kind of a strange issue... I have an 85 GSL-SE. The tranny has been rebuilt and it has a new Clutch slave. I can smell the clutch burning, even when it is in neutral. When I am cruising, & I hit the gas, the engine winds up (as it should) during acceleration, but the transmission is not getting the power. It winds up, than eventually grabs and winds down and eventually begins to accelerate. Like I said, I can smell the clutch burning. I have adjusted the rod on the pedal to ensure it is not too far in. It was fine. It's like the forks are not coming back far enough to disengage the clutch. I can grab the top of the forks and pull forward toward to front of the vehicle, and can see the level of fluid rise in the master reservoir. It almost like there is too much pressure in the lines and it is keeping the clutch too far forwad when released. The system has been bled. Any ideas why the clutch is not desengaging enough?? I am pretty baffled so any ideas would be much appreciated.

I definately, cant move it towards the rear of the tranny when I push on it. It moves ever so slightly to the front when I pull on it. The fluid in the reservoir comes up just a couple of mm above the FULL mark. It takes a pretty good amount of pressure to get it to move though. After I pull on it, it wiggles a bit, then tightens back up.

Ah, I misread your post. Your clutch fork sounds fine.
Did you replace the line that connects the master cylinder to the slave cylinder? Occasionally these wear out so much you don't get the full range when you push on the clutch.
The only thing I can think of would be a bad pressure plate, maybe bent or broken fingers.

The slave is new. The flywheel was turned. The clutch and pressure plate are both new (stage 2 racing clutch). The Master is original (as far as I can tell). The lines are all original as well. The release bearing is new also, but the pilot is not. It seemed fine and they are such a pain to get out. I cleaned & lubed it up real good inside as well. I do have a replacement which I will definately do of I have to pull the tranny again. (I will grin & bear it). I can shift great through all the gears very easily. As long as I go easy on it, you cant even really tell there is any problem (aside form the buring clutch smell). Its when I hit the gas and try to scoot. It just revs up and then back down, like the clutch is slipping, and finally grabs and begins to get momentum. Could the pilot have something to do with it?? Anyone who's got any ideas, feel free to jump in anytime :-)

Michael

Did you very carefully clean off the parts when you installed?
Use brake cleaner on the flywheel surface and the pressure plate surface?
Try bleeding your system more, it may just be that.
Though the only thing left mechanical I would check would still be the PP (**** happens) or get a close inspection of the Fork for any cracks. Breaking the fork is very rare though. And it wouldn't explain slipping with the clutch dis-engaged.

It does whine a little with my foot off the clutch, and stops, when the pedal is depressed. I guess I gotta drop the tranny. Swap the pilot, check the clutch assembly, and bleed the system. That's what I was trying to avoid! Oh well.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. If anyone thinks of anything else (that is easier) please... let me know!
Thanks,
Michael
