Smile changing carburators

I'm looking for some feedback here. I've searched the forums but haven't found a solid answer about carbs. I want to switch to the Holley carb kit, do I need an upgraded fuel pump and regulator to make it work right? What about downpipes(headers) also?
thanks

We need a little more info here... Are you running a first gen or second gen or what? Originally a carbureted or fuel injected engine?

You say changing carburetors and your profile lists the 1984 12A, so I'm gonna assume that's the car.

You will want that upgraded fuel pump and regulator. I believe most people are running the Holley Red fuel pump, although Mallory and Carter make equivalent units.

For headers, there is only one name that anyone will recommend... Racing Beat...

It's pricey, but it will outlast the car and possibly you.

Here is a writeup I did on upgrading the fuel pump: https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605

But do your research before you decide on a carb. At the very least, do some reading here before you make your decision: www.sterlingmetalworks.com

Good luck.

Sorry, it is a 1984 gsl, 12a first gen. the nikki carb has been rebuilt but still giving me issues. I've been led to believe that the holly carb will function with 3 psi from the original fuel pump, but I would'nt see any increase in horse power. If I do upgrade the fuel pump will i need an upgraded fuel rugulater also? What about the heat sheild that is offered by mazdatrix, is it needed as well? Just trying to get all my ducks in a row, want to fix my car right.

The problem with Hollies is that there just so damned big. The large bore results in lower air velocities, which in turn degrades driveability. A bigger carb does not mean more power, if it is too big for the motor. But of course, the choice is always yours. I just hate to see people make an investment like that if there is a chance they will regret it. Good luck....
