If you need a reliable car and you don't have money beyond what you plan for fuel and initial purchase, move on. Imported FDs especially tend to have problems that need sorted, because you have no way to know it's history.
You'll also get crap fuel economy with these cars, if you need to drive a lot of miles consider that for sure.
These cars can be reliable if you take your time modding them and get to know what each mod will do to the system. But it takes cash and it can help a lot if you have alternate transportation. You need to fix the little things as they come up because if you ignore it when it's little, the bigger version of the problem later can be really bad.

Money isnt an issue, fuel expense is fine ... i dont want to spend 15k for a left hand drive when i can get a right hand drive for 9k. Id like to know about availability of parts and as far as reliability i dont mind putting money in to fix things up aslong as i dont put down another 10k at 1 shot in the first month of spending 9k for a car. Thanks for replying Dave

i know a lot of people that tiger japanese has ripped off. there is a guy on this forum that his signature is something like "tiger japanese ripped me off don't buy from them", so you need to think about that, but on the other hand a close friend of mine just bought a s13 silvia from them and the car is running perfect, he brought the car to my shop and the only problem we found with it was dirty coolant so far. he took a compression tester their and tested the car before he bought it, that might help you out, and as far as taking care of the car and the cost of repairs no one can promise you anything but the more you know about rotary motors the better. even a oil change on a rotary is different. but like dgeesaman said you need to take care of the car as much as possible, fix problems as soon as possible. good luck and may the force be with you.

A lot of imported cars arrive with a bad coolant seal. That will add $5k to the price tag rather quickly.
If I bought that RHD JDM car I'd assume it has a major problem, and if it doesn't, consider it a bonus.

Your going to spend around 5k when you first get the car with reliability mods (including labor).
After my car gets finished getting painted, I would have spent close to 30k (including car) and I've only had my car since august. Having said that, I love it and regret nothing. If you do buy the car, your in for quite a ride. Its the greatest joy combined with deep sorrow at every turn.

i bought my car at tiger japanese. I originally went down to look at one of the fd's on their website and when i got there the car was nothing like the pictures and description had mentioned. After noticing a few others in the lot i started to look at them. By the end of the day i had test driven 2 cars, one of the engines blew WHILE i was driving it and the other already had a seal problem. The pain with tiger japanese is they normally won't let you move the car other than around the parking lot. I just lied and told the guy that i had already bought a vehicle off of him and was happy with it, and that i was planning on doing it again - after i did a real test drive. Long story short by the end of the day i ended up buying one from them with 50k on it with a real banged up body. But i got it for 5 thousand. If you're going to deal with tiger you need to look over everything you can and hope for some luck as well. But they are quite easy to pull down in price which can make the difference if it needs repairs.
