Bulletproof rotary FD, your thoughts

10 years ago I financed my first FD. It had a pfs intercooler and a pfs purple box piggy back and the guy said pfs had installed the engine and tuned it. Shortly after I purchased it the turbo housing cracked so I decided to go single. Honestly back then I had no mechanical knowledge. I helped my friend install a T04B and the car turned into a monster. We had no way of tuning it except turning the pfs piggy back from low to medium or to high.

I ran it at 15psi and abused that car for over a year, constantly racing it. The turbo wouldn’t kick in until 4k rpms, but at 4k it would hit so hard, I miss that feeling. It was definitely running rich because my back bumper kept turning black. I got laid off from my job and had to let the bank repo the car. I decided to pull off all the upgrades before I gave it back. When I went to remove the pfs piggy back I found out it wasn’t even plugged in, it was just sitting there. So the whole time I was running the car with a T4 there was no management.

Im guessing the ecu got a tune from pfs and they installed larger fuel injectors. Now I would never run a turbo car without a wideband and after reading these forums and seeing people blowing their engines because of the smallest modifications I realize I must have been the luckiest guy to have that car run for over a year without blowing it up.

After that experience I felt that the rotary engine was bulletproof, but I see a lot of people on here are having major issues.

Was it just a freak occurrence or have you heard of other people with similar stories?

Would larger injectors and an upgraded IC be enough to keep the engine from blowing or do you think the ecu had to be reprogrammed?
Thanks for the input.

10 years later and I just purchased my 2nd FD. I have learned a lot over those 10 years, but still have lots to learn.

Oversized injectors without any fuel management (assuming the ecu was left alone) would mean running extra rich. Extra rich means lower chance of detonation, but it's not exactly an optimized setup. You probably had a lot more power potential if the fuel and timing were tuned properly to suit the turbo.
