83 is Flooding and rebuilding Carb
Hello , just got a 83 that has being sitting a few years, Managed to get it running.
The engine would run for about 30 seconds then slowly die . I figure it was flooding since gas was leaking out the sides of the Carb and under the base etc. I bought carb kit and have the carb removed from the engine. This is the biggest Carb I have ever seen.
I need some courage. I am afraid to take the whole thing apart, because I may not get it back to gether or every lever and setting reset correctly.
Question. Would a partial cleaning by removing the top of the Carb and cleaning out the Float Chambers be good alternative rather than a total overhaul? SC

your floats need work. just taking off the carb top will not solve the issue.
i can see it as one of three things-
1. floats are stuck. remove carb top and make sure they swing freely.
2. float levels are too high. likely on new carb build, not when youre bringing it back to life.
3. float is sunk. take carb top off and remove float. shake it and see if it is retaining any fuel in it. if it is, replace the float and set the height so fuel flows from one chamber to another but not too high. usually the manufacturer gives a spec on how far it should rest from the carb top.
number three is the more likely scenario, but check all these in order, so if you find the problem it will save you a bit of work.
and dont be afraid of your carb, they are simple little devices.

Make sure you removed the center bolt that retains the air cleaner. A good source for info is www.sterlingmetalworks.com

Victory, Center bolt removed. Lots of rust, Looks like a float was stuck. Carb was not gummed up... just rusty orange. After cleaning it , replacing gaskets. Reinstalled. The Rx cranked up in 3 seconds . Whoopee. I need to get the choke heater spring attached right but other than that, Car is running good. Thanks for the Help. Now I have to rebuild or replace Master Cylinder. Cheers, SC
