I'm not positive, but AFAIK they aren't assigned a number. At least not one that can be cross-referenced with the VIN.
Remanufactured motors come with an adhesive metallic sticker on the front cover, but OEM motors have no discernible numbers.
There have been previous threads with links and information on how to decipher the VIN if that's the information your looking for...but it may only apply to North American Models. Check the stickys in the 3rd Gen. section.

hmmm, you mean to say that there is no number anywhere on the engine? There is a metal plate with the vin no. on the inside of the chasis behind the engine. Mines a direct import from Japan.

Yep. That's what I mean to say. There are various casting numbers, but nothing meaningful.
What are you looking for anyway?

Behind the power steering pump / alternator on the front cover you will find a tag. I don't think the number has much meaning, except to see if it's an original engine.

You see in order for me to register the car the traffic department wants to check to see if the engine no. on the engine is the same as that on the papers. Would I have to remove anything to be able to see it?

Thanks guys

I'm assuming you have access to at least view this post:

The engine number will NOT match the chassis number (i.e. VIN).
