1990 convertible speaker questions
Hello all, I have a 1990 RX-7 Convertible. Right now the entire stereo system is stock. It has the Pioneer tape/cd high power system. There are speakers in the door panels, headrests and behind the seats near the floor. I have several questions about upgrading the speakers if anyone can help. Thanks.
1) I was on crutchfield.com and it says that my car has speakers in the dash? Is this true and if so, where are they located?
2) Can the speakers behind the seats on the floor be upgraded? If so, what size would fit and what is involved in installing them?
3) What type/kind of speakers would sound best if i planned to use them with the existing factory radio without an additional amp?
4) If I upgrade the head unit, will the headrest speakers still work?

1) Yes, you will have two 4" speakers under the dash on either side. They face your knees.
2) S5 convertibles have some small 4" woofers behind the seats, but from the pictures I've seen, you could modify the opening to accept something larger.
3) I'd suggest sticking to name-brand speakers like Pioneer, etc...
4) Yes, so long as they are wired to the headunit properly and the headrest speaker amp is still working.

My door speakers finally gave out, so I replaced them last night with two polk 6.5" db651S. I just have a headunit and factory amps, but the bass is actually pretty nice. Highs and mids are clear too. I already had two 4" polk db series speakers under the dash, but they don't do much. They're too small and face down, so they can barely be heard. I have an S4, so no woofers behind the seats, and I swapped out the seats with headrest speakers, but it's still enough with the top down.

My '90 vert does not have speakers under the dash. I have 2 door speakers (6.5?) and the headrest speakers. I have what appear to be speakers behind the seat, but I hear only static/empty noise coming from them.
