1987 fc budget project
I am considering buying a 1987 n\a s4. The car has 139k miles, but the current owner (not original, dont know of the cars history before him) told me he replaced the engine with a new, factory 13b, and it has about 5k miles on it. But, it hasnt been run in a few years. The current owner is into hillclimb racing, but I do not know of any modifications to the car. I am just looking to get it running and roadworthy. I wouldnt be driving it this year anyways, I'd only have another 2, maybe 3 months before I would need to garage it until May. (dang Vermont winter) I do know the car needs brakes, most likely the lines are rotted along with a battery and hes got some bald kuhmo's on it now, so it'd need tires too. Tried to start it, showed 12 volts on the dash meter, but wouldnt engage the starter. Tried tow starting it, engine turned over but wouldnt stay running. Any tips to get the car started after a long sit? If it starts i'll definitly buy it. may buy it anyways, its a steal (500 bucks) with very little rust and some fading paint. Also, not exactly sure what model it is, possibly the sport? it has the 4 lug phone dial wheels, no power anything.
Any ideas are welcome, thanks alot.

If the battery is low it will flood the engine with fuel causing it not to start and if it does start not stay running for long until the fuel is out of the combustion chambers. A way to see if its flooded and de-flood it if it is flooded is to pull the bottom two spark plugs out and the egi fuse in the main fuse box in the engine bay and jump the battery while cranking the engine over for about 5 seconds. Crank the engine for about 5 seconds a few times to get the fuel out of the engine then clean the sparkplugs and holes and put alittle bit of oil into the holes to build compression. Put the spark plugs back and try to start it. Im not saying thats definitely the problem but its definitely worth a try. Even if you can't get it started I would buy it anyway. Rx-7s are a really fun car to drive and make good project cars too. I bought my last FC for $300 and it needs a hell of a lot of work but it's all worth it.
