AB 12A and 13B newbie, putting into a Silvia…

Hello all my name is Dustin and I've been an import guy for awhile now but I've been a Nissan guy but now I want to put 2 different engines into my Silvia the first being a 12A out of a first gen I'm wanting to build this engine into a small monster by porting everything i can and adding a turbo as it is a n/a engine. The motor does have a transmission with it, I'm planning on tearing the engine apart in the new year and doing all the work myself. Personally the rats nest has me a little scarred especially with me planning on putting it into a Nissan, will this be a huge issue? both engine and car are sitting so cutting and taking apart stuff will be no problem when I do get to it. Im planning on if possible to change from a carb to an EFI system. I have looked a little through the forums but haven't found anything on it in the newbie section as I'm new here and am trying to get enough posts to look through the rest of the forums. I will keep posting and searching though. Anyway the other engine is a 13B twin turbo somewhere between a 93-95 year engine is pretty mint as it sits but I'm planning on tearing it apart aswell after the 12A build and turning it into a true beast to turn my car into track smasher but I'll leave out that until I start into it plus after I do the 12A I'll have learned a huge amount of knowledge and probably won't have to ask so many questions lol. Anyway it's great to have found this place and I can't wait to see what my little bastard child of a car will turn out like!!

Dustin

Welcome to the forum.

For the 12A I would start just get it in the car and running nothing more extras. What you need is an exhaust system and all the rest may go, except 2 vacuum lines to the distributor.
If you want to convert it to EFI then you need some extra stuff like throttle body's, injectors ( http://www.tweakit.net/shop/product_...roducts_id=117 ) and a ECU also search the forum on FI conversion.

Ha a 13B-REW: they can be put standard to higher levels without tearing them apart, change the difficult vacuum system to a easy'er form of the system and you will find your self making much faster boost and spin up times. Other exhaust and/ or other turbo's, ...

Hope this is a little bit help full

I would rebuild, and port the 13b and put it in the Silvia and just forget the 12a. Just wondering though, why arent you swapping in an sr20det or a ca18det? If and when I own a 240 or Silvia Im planning on doing an RB26 swap.

Why 12A? 12A parts are getting hard to find, and you're at a disadvantage displacement wise starting with the 12A. Plus, while there are 12A turbo parts around (even an OEM 12A turbo) they are exceedingly hard to find compared to the fact you can buy a turbo 13B from any J-spec dealer for $500 - $1000. Then all the fabrication you have to worry about is actually getting it into your car as opposed to building a turbo manifold, intake manifold, etc.

Since the 13B is already set up for EFI, a standalone of your choice will run it (see the mass amounts of info in the Engine Management section of this forum). Where if you started with the 12A, you'd need to either go with a custom/aftermarket lower intake, add injector bungs, swap in a GSL-SE mid iron (since you are taking it apart anyway, might as well since it has injector bungs), etc.

Well about the sr20 and rb26 stuff I've always wanted too but everyone does those swaps as they are quite easy I just really want to be different plus you can't beat the sweet sound of a rotary when it's all wound up at full throttle. As for doing the 12a first is so I can gain the knowledge of working on that first so I don't go and **** up a perfectly good 13b and it's the being different thing again lol. Also on the fabricating note I'll be pretty much making everything myself anyway ie; the intake manifold, exhaust mani and the full exhaust system that will exit in front of the rear tires. Obviously I will be taking mad pics of all this when I get started in the couple weeks after I get back from my vacation. I also think I'll just stick with a carburetor on the 12a for now to make life a bit easier. I'm glad I've stirred a little interested in my project I'm about to start I just can't wait to see the completed project…well I guess there never really finished though are they?!? Lol

Its cool to be different and yes I do love rotary engines but to me I believe that if a swap is being done it should stay from within the same manufacturer. For example, the RB26 in a 240sx or a 20b in an FC. Nissan and Nissan, Mazda and Mazda. I love Silvias so regardless of what you choose it will still be an awesome project. It sucks youve had so many of your 240s stolen. Im kind of worried about people messing with my vert FC when its on the road.

Sounds interesting, I would take Aaron Cakes advise and start with the 13b. Can't wait to see some pics.

Please don't ruin any perfectly good rotary, because good used parts are even getting slightly harder to find for the newer 13Bs. 12A parts are getting very scarce, so it would suck for you to ruin some to gain knowledge.

No reason to build your own intake manifold when going with a 13B turbo. If you want to you can install the 13B turbo block, run it with a carburetor (yuck) as NA.

Why in gods name would you put a rotary is a silvia? to each his own but a sr20 or rb25 would be way cheaper and easier right?
