Speed Cameras in Maryland?
Hey guys, I'm living in Seattle, WA at the moment, but I am planning to return to Maryland very soon.
My mom (still lives in MD) keeps freaking me out saying that "speed cameras are everywhere and they are planning thousands more!". This includes vans/cars with cameras as well as fixed mount cameras on signs or overpasses.
Is this a bunch of **** or what? I think she might be exaggerating to scare me into driving more slowly.
I don't have a beef with red light cameras since running a red light is extremely dangerous... however, a camera that will zap you for 5 over the limit is ridiculous. Are these really a major problem or what?
Thanks,
Brian

Yeah DC had a few even when I was last there almost two years ago. Fortunately, they were easy to keep track of mentally and could be avoided...
80 mph ... 80 mph... speed cam ahead... 45 mph.... game on! - 85 mph... etc.
If there get to be too many of these things, it will become cheaper just to drive with no plate and eat the tickets you get from that.
P.S. I am joking about driving 85 in a 45

yeah, i got a caught in a speed trap going 84mph on I-95. this is my first speeding ticket, i am a pilot and have the "eyes". there was not a cop in sight that could have clocked me. now granted i am aware of their GTO's and mustang unmarked cars. there was non of them. saying there are cameras is a pretty good bet!

I know that Montgomery County has several installed. They've taken to putting them up on Montgomery Village Ave. I know a few buddies who have gotten mailed tickets from there. Kinda ticks me off, because I know that they're installing them for $$$, not safety.
No plans that I know of for any anywhere else in the state except maybe Baltimore cities busiest streets (if they don't get shot out there) and the speed limit isn't reachable on those streets anyway between the potholes, double parking, and the completely non-synced lights.

OK cool... VTECthis, if you hear anything, let us know
A general comment: Let's try to fight against these things. When you read about a council or lawmaker voting on this stuff, let's be sure to let them know that we don't like them!
I personally feel that they cause accidents. People slam the brakes when they see one just like they slam the brakes when a police car comes into view around a bend.

Yup, they are talking about it. You can either get a cover that hides your tag #'s at an angle(obvious to the cops), or you can get the spray-on stuff that you cant even tell that is there. Its like a clear coat paint that makes the tag not readable by reflecting, or intencifying the flash from the camera.

In Saturday's Balitmore Sun, there was an article wherein a state Senator has proposed installing them in Howard County. There is considerable discussion, with the principle objection being that the owner of the car will be ticketed, not the driver. Under the proposed plan, there would be no points assigned.
