Well Sundays event at VMP was quite the exercise in car control.

Vmp

I thought VMP this past weekend was a lot of fun. Especially watching all the V8's slide all over the place.

niburu 08-01-05 02:47 PM

It was a ton of fun! V8's are fun to watch in the rain. I am waiting on the pics and stats to get put up on the VMSC site still.

There was a red S5 coupe and a white GTUs at VIR this weekend. I didn't get a chance to talk to them, but when I get home (hotel) tonight, I'll post the pics and see if it was anyone that we know.

My friend Jake has a white GTUs, and I know he has wanted to drive VIR for a while, but he had some things to install before he tracked it. Not sure if he made it down this weekend or not...

On a sidenote... my car is all primered up and I have lots of sanding ahead of me. :)

brianmcd 08-03-05 10:17 PM

Hey, didn't see your post. I wish I had been there. I was going to go but HPDE 1 filled up so my friend couldn't go, and I didn't wanna go down by myself. HPDE 2 was still open so I should have gone anyway. I really wanna do the north course. I've done all the bits of it except the right hander before the esses.

I am, however, going to VIR weekend after this one. Full course again. I'll be sure to get more and better video this time.

What car were you driving? How'd you like it? Got videos or pics?

Track = the win.

Hey what all do you need to do to run on the road courses at VIR. All i have done is Autox in my RX7 but would like to run some road courses too.

I was working, not driving.

I'm Assistant Chief of Timing and Scoring for NASA-MA now.

Maybe the TII will make it on track one day - one day....one day.

On the upside, as of Sunday, I have a two car, heated and air conditioned garage.

WOOTUS!

brianmcd 08-04-05 05:04 PM

Just have a car in good working condition, especially in regards to brakes and tires. Check out www.mazdadrivers.com, they put on great events.

Hey buddy v8 sounds more and more healthy to me at this point. I know friends can mess with engines and when it comes to rotory, they just say SORRY MAN. So please do you know the cost to do the transformation of v8 for 90 rx7 convert.
thanks!

rgordon1979 08-06-05 08:13 AM

I am in the process of doing a conversion now to a 88. You can do it pretty cheap with the LT1 motor. Check out www.grannysspeedshop.com, www.hinsonsupercars or www.torquecentral.com

I would say if you do some research and look for a good deal on a motor you can easily do it for under $2000.

I've checked into this a few time's
from the Hinson site

"We have enclosed a typical price breakdown for the average 2nd Gen LS1 RX7.

2nd Gen. RX7 LS1 Mounting Equip. $359
Drive shaft (steel) $275 (Aluminum DS is $145 upgrade)
Cooling System: $641.50
Fuel System $630
Wiring Modifications $400
Speedometer Correction $285 "

thats over 2 grand before you even get the engine.

Now the LT-1 engine is a iron block and way heavier than the 13b engine you'll totally throw the balance of the car off, however the LS-1 though being an aluminum block weighs about the same as the 13B. I don't know you'd find either of those engines in good condition for under a thousand.
It's not a low cost project no matter how you look at it, I wish to god it was.
If you can do the swap yourself you would definetly save yourself alot of money, I unfortunately don't have a garage or much in the way of tools - because I'd be very tempted if I did.

rgordon1979 08-08-05 12:37 PM

I guess $2000 is a bit optimistic, but I was referring to the price of a LT1 conversion. A lot of people use the stock cooling system and buy a gm fuel pump and regulator for pretty cheap, among other things. Hinson is running a business, trying to sell stuff that you might not necessarily need, but make the install go easier.

niburu 08-08-05 02:11 PM

the LT-1 is a heavy bastard though, they are definetly cheaper than the LS-1

Yeah, that is why I am saving my pennies for a LS1.....:D

niburu 08-09-05 07:01 AM

Compared to a rotary engine with all of it's accesories, heavy duty exhaust, etc., An LT1 swap is not that much heavier... Remember, a V8 has a LOT of open space internally, whereas a Rotary Engine is fairly solid....

but you have to include the accesories weight tfor the LT-1 as well
I think if you are going to go V8 then the LS-1 is your best bet
either way it ain't gonna be as cheap as you hope or want

cafcwest 08-09-05 04:42 PM

its not that I don't appove of V8 swaps but...

the Richmond thread has officially hit a new low

onepointone 08-09-05 05:44 PM

anyways, i have come back from the dead. anyone down for g-force anytime soon? i know brian is leaving for college sometime soon and had said something about going before then. anyone else down?

so if you don't not approve of V8 swaps why is it at a new low?

cafcwest 08-11-05 08:57 AM

because there is little to no discussion/no meets/etc.

what little was being discussed was regarding V8 swaps

or to put better

this weekend dawg?

niburu 08-11-05 12:17 PM

VMSC is having the last autocross to be allowed at the the Manchester HS location this Sunday (8/14). For those interested in attending it is going to be another early start - car inspection from 8-9 and the first car should be off by 10.
I'll be there for sure and so will Jason (js512tr).
