NJ: Register as a collector vehicle?
This may be my only option for running my car in NJ. Has anyone done this?

I have it on my car. I pulled up with no front plate and tinted windows and all they care about is that your odometer is working. They'll tell you to take a short drive and come back to prove that its working and thats it! Its a triangle shaped sticker.

As an update to this, the process may have been changed as of 1/2007.

"So here's what you need to do:
1. Get a daily driver.
2. Register the daily driver, get it insured, and get a copy of the declarations page.
3. Get a letter stating that the supra was produced in limited numbers (the magic number for the state of NJ is <2500). THIS TENDS TO BE THE MOST DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING PART. You can get this from a recognized car club (I have no idea how NJ DMV decides if the car club is recognized or not. They just state that you need to have the letter stating proof of limited production on the car club's stationary.) NJ DMV also allows you to get this from the vehicle manufacturer, so I decided to contact toyota myself. On their website, under contacts, they "customer experience number" is 1-800-331-4331. I called and muddled through the automated menu until I got to speak to a real person. I told them that I needed a letter stating the supra's limited production numbers. I was directed to Diaema Shealay for this request. Please note that never once (despite calling 7 times over 2 months) did I actually speak to this person. I recommend saving the case number they give you. It helps smooth out the agonizingly slow process of hassling them to get a move on it. I finally received a fax number from her liasons (I use the term loosely) and faxed in a request (attn: Diaema Shealay) with the following two pages (I included the NJ DMV address on one and pulled the other from MKIV.com):"
I'm going to try to go to the DMV in the morning to see what's up. I already have collector car insurance so hopefully that'll be enough to get me started but I'm not hopeful.

Prewww!!!
Thanks man.
As usual, life has shown me there are no shortcuts in life. You do have to mail stuff to Trenton.
As already been stated...

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/c...r_vehicles.htm
"Vehicles applying for collector vehicle status must be approved by MVC. Follow these steps to apply:
Complete the collector vehicle application [41k pdf]
Submit a letter from the vehicle manufacturer, recognized car club or a collector organization attesting to the vehicle’s limited production status. Must be printed on official letterhead
Show proof of limited-use insurance
Include photographs of front, driver side, passenger side and rear of the vehicle "

Prew, thanks for posting what you submitted. I just received my letter from the NJ DMV today with the approval to go register the 7 as a collector car! I mailed in the application last Monday and got the approval in the mail today.

I just completed this yesterday, it was pretty easy. I got all the paperwork from Trenton a week after I mailed it out, went to the DMV and got a $25 collector car voucher, then drove over to the inspection station with no horn, no front plate, no airbags, no emissions, etc... They just wanted to check the odometer. 15 minutes later I had the triangle sticker.

They changed the requirements for this. Your so called collector car has to be of limited production, like the 10th anniversary or the GTUs and so on. Therefore your regular 7 can no longer be considered a collector car. If you already have this and your car is not of limited production don't change back to regular registration.

If you read the whole thread, what I posted is acceptable to NJ to prove these cars are of limited production. Myself and most of the people in this thread have registered our cars this way AFTER they changed the rules.
