Moved to Ithaca, NY Concerned about emissions

Hello all,
I have recently made a job change that took me from Appleton, Wi to Ithaca, NY. I have a fairly modified 1994 Mazda RX-7 and am concerned about the emissions testing that is required here in NY.
As part of this move, I also would like to know if there is anyone in the Ithaca with RX-7's or other sports cars that would be interested in getting together. So far I have not found alot of car people in the area.

As for some background on the car, it has all the performance mods including a GT35R and custom made open exhaust. I do have a brand new high flow cat that I can put in place of a muffler (Borla X-1). This lives about where the factory cat once lived. On the back I have a open 3 in to 2 2.5 out basic muffler.

It is not quiet or friendly to the environment, but it sure is fun. I just want to be able to continue to drive this car going forward here in New York...

Any advice or thoughts on this are greatly appreciated

Thanks
David B.

You might want to talk to the members in the East Coast regional subforum who know the details of the NY testing. There will be an obvious problem if there's a strict visual test.

New York has strict emmissions and I think that it woul probably not pass but all u have to do is put one on for the emissions test and take it off later, at least thats what I did and New Jersey basically has the same rules.

Howard, I like that idea sometimes, but it is easier said than done, as I do have a fun job here. As to the other things, I was wondering if anyone knows of places to even go to talk to people who may be in the same or similar situation.

Hay, instead of Road America, I now have Watkins Glenn. Also a decent road course. Not sure of how they compare till I get on it this year, but that will be another post :-)

In Jersey there are shops that will pass your car through inspection, if you get what Im saying, i know that from personal experience. I would bet the same is true in NY, but if youre trying to be completely legal id say remove the exhaust, go back to stock, and then reinstall. The previous owner of my FC lived in Ithaca, and his car was old enough that it didnt require emissions testing, or so he said. i dont know what the age cut off is tho. ~Mike

I would suspect there are not allot of RX-7's in Ithaca, but I may be wrong. This seems to be a fairly green area and the RX is not the most green car on the road.

I was up to Rochester not that long ago for a meeting at IBM. Are there any central get togethers etc in this area.?

Thanks

NYS DMV Emissions Testing

A low-enhanced emissions test is required for cars 1995 and older in the Upstate Area. It's just a gas cap check and a visual inspection. If the car is more than 25 years old, it's exempt.

I live in Clifton Park/Halfmoon and go to school in Albany. Unfortunately, my FB is in TN with my fiance. I didn't know there was anyone else from Albany on here, I never see any RX-7s on the road.

You have nothing to worry about...

My friend lives upstate and they don't do emissions...

Only safety. Lights, cracked glass, and tires...

Have fun and welcome to New York!
