the 02 - 04.5 trans were "glass trans" they cant handle more than stock power levels without starting to ruin synchros. the 04.5 - 08 5 speeds were better but still cant handle large horsepower numbers. The 6 speeds were all fantastic, they're pretty much the end all trans for Subaru's. They just cant be beat.

even the PPG 5 speeds arent as good, the 5 speed cases need to be braced and built up just to handle the power, in the end, youre MUCH better off going with an STi 6 speed if youre going to be pushing lots of power.

that said, a FULL 5 speed swap can be had for about 800 bucks, where as an STi 6 speed is about 3500 - 3800 for the trans only, a full swap can run up to 5500 depending on the actual trans.

On top of this, the 04 STi was a 5x100 wheel while the 05+ were 5x114, so that has to be taken into account as well.

Im hoping to have a 6 speed in my STi by the end of the summer maybe towards winter.

there arent any cables, just a linkage that goes from the shifter in the car down to the transmission.

Legacy gt trans from 05 and up are very strong. hardened gears and such. and geared for like 155mph or something. My fxt tranny isnt as strong and is only geared for 137mph (i've almost mechanically topped my car out pretty quickly.....) so if you want something fast accellerating but not top speed. go for a forester xt tranny. haha.

Lagacy spec B trans is the best out there. Its a six speed and the 6th gear is actually for fuel economy unlike the sti 6th gear. The only problem is its a open front diff

id still go STi trans all the way, most likely JDM, Version 7 STi non DCCD for that matter. geared for acceleration.

You have to remember this, the Subaru Transmissions were made for rally, if you notice the cars arent exactly... aerodynamic, but when you rarely top out over 100 miles an hour, you dont need to take those things as heavily into account.

the Leg trans ARE strong but still not strong enough for me :P 430 whp and ill be eating them alive, i need to go STi 6 speed, i dont have a lot choice since the 5 speed cases flex too much and require extra bracing.

you are probaly right that the STi is easyer it seems like putting a spce b trans in a impreza is a pain, but I dont under stand why the spec B 6-speed doesn't hold as much power. I thought they internals they were basicly the same as the STi.

its not any different, it should bolt up no problem, but im looking for an acceleration gearing rather than the fuel economy.

Right now, my buddy is making 330 awhp out of his built 2.0, im making 350 on a rough tune out of my 2.5 but his car is faster because he has better gearing out of his STi 6 speed.

they way the spec-b 6speed speed sensor works is different than that on the STi so you need a different bell housing and all the speed sensor stuff plus some other thing I think I am not really sure I just know is not a direct bolt up. I agree for racing the STi is better but if you plan on driving on the highway I would recommend the Spec-B trans.

sti 6 speed is fine for the highway. My speedo is fast by 3-4 mph but ~ 2k in 6th im around 60 mph, probably a little less.

So gen when you goin open source? I'm gettin a downpipe and need an AP!!

AP!!
I don't believe that for 1 second. My WRX is turning 3k at 70 mph and it has a lower 5th gear ratio that the STi 6th.

WRX 5th = 0.738
STi 6th = 0.756

both with a 3.90 final drive

and just for comparison
2008 legacy spec B
6th= 0.707
also with a 3.90 final drive.

im at 2800 rpm at 70 mph.

and it is a direct bolt in, ive seen them done, and they have open front and center diffs.

Theres a reason Subarus are called Lego cars. Any EJ engine can bolt to any EJ transmission and they can all be put into any car that had an EJ engine in them, its a nice thing.

Im running a 98RS with a full RHD GD swap, including a hybrid STi engine, rotated ball bearing turbo, WRX 5 speed etc. my old Brighton was a Stage 4 WRX 2.0 swap.

well i went open source already, buttt my AP is kinda screwed up, ill sell it to you cheap, but im not sure it can be fixed. Cobb doesnt like to fix problems when the owner isnt the original owner.

What's exactly wrong with it Gen?

I'll see what I'm at for speed in 6th tomorrow. Dont know why my speedo is off by 3-4, must be the tire brand. All I know is that I'm not at 3k in 6th doing 70, or maybe i have a terrible memory

well, it wouldnt let me unmarry the AP from the car when i went to open source, but my tuner has a degree in computer programming so he has a program that allowed us to access the ecu anyway and flash the AP away.

It CAN be reset, but Cobb is a pain in the ***, so you can try and see if they'll reset it, but i cant promise they will. If you dont want it, thats fine, to me its just a brick.
