i had to remove the window washer resevoir, as well as disconnect half the intake just to get to them. the driver side plugs are hard to get do, and there's not much room for leverage.

that didn't even fix my problem...i've gotta get a whole new MAF wiring harness, since one of the wires is sliced almost all the way through.

Too bad I'm not still up there. I love a good electrical bug, I can slam my head into the wall all day, but it's so self rewarding after I cleanse the gremlins!

this is my first attempt at tackling electrical problems, and quite frankly, it scares the bejeesus out of me. i'm making the roommate help, because he's MUCH more comfortable with wiring than i am.

heh...you'd have been laughing your *** off at me, though. i looked funny trying to pull out the boots for the wires on the driver side.

...well, at least I was laughing at me...

we did, and that didn't work...so it may be damaged inside the clip. without a voltmeter, i have no way of knowing if it's even getting current to it. i've sourced a used clip with about 8" of good wire attached to it, so with luck i'll have something to try this weekend. i'm trying everything i can to get her running in time for the autox event at Ripken on Saturday. i want to run the car.

Radio shack has a multi meter that's 10 bucks in a little flip case (gotta buy a 6 dollar camera battery for it...) but I've had this thing for 3 years, best investment i've ever made.

that would be a wasted purchase - i don't understand wiring/electricity. my roommate will be dealing with that for me(running new wire, soldering, etc).

i appreciate the offer, but i was tipped off on a couple of items that should make things a bit easier for me, and the electronic supply store in Towson should carry said items. with luck, the roommate and i will have the car up and running this weekend, depending on how quickly the dude with the wiring and connector gets them shipped to me.

yes, i did, but i did not purchase from a dealer(can you say rapefest?). it was a private sale...and it did not happen until AFTER purchase.

besides, since it's a private sale, there is no assumed warranty. now if this were my only vehicle i'd be a bit miffed...but i still have the Corolla for another couple of weeks, and i will be aquiring my parents' minivan after that. i am not lacking in transportation, so i'm not going to be AS concerned and annoyed about it.

we figured out both a solution to the existing problem AND something to prevent this from happening again, so we should be good to go.

besides...i'm getting a free MAF sensor in the process, and those would cost me if i purchased one from Subaru. since the MAF sensor in the older 2.5L SOHC tends to be fragile, it'll be nice to have a spare.

heh, most dealers aren't totally raping you... you're paying more because most decent dealers actually go over the car looking for problems, and then give the car some kind of decent warranty. So basically you're paying for peace of mind.

Sure, peace of mind is not needed on a project car that you don't intend to drive often, but for a daily driver, I don't mind paying the dealer a bit more. IT's not because I don't want to or don't know how to fix the car if something goes wrong, it's more because if something goes wrong, I don't want to be stuck unable to get to work...

Don't get me wrong, the dealers do charge quite a bit more than they should... which is why when I'm getting something from the dealer, I ALWAYS try to knock them down at least another $1k before I buy from them. I've never really bought used cars from the dealer myself, but I've helped several friends get much better deals on their new/used cars from the dealer.

Try getting that dealership to honor that warranty. I've had so many bad exp with dealers (EVEN ON BRAND NEW CARS!!!) that I'll never take my car to a dealer, and I'd only take it to a mechanic for A/C Service (in which case I wouldn't be dropping off the car I'd be baby sitting). You should see me in an alignment shop, most mechanics appreciate the fact that I just paid full price to do their job for them on their alignment rack .

I've met so few people who know what they are doing, and almost none of them are profesionals.

I guess I've been lucky with the dealer, my step-father runs the service dept at the one I go to, and I know his best mechanic... I'd trust him to work on just about anything I own.

I've never had trouble getting a good dealer to honor the warranty though (talking about friends' cars).

after working in the service dept of a dealership...they'll only see the car if it's something so major i CANNOT repair it(that, or they hire me on for evenings and weekends as a cashier...). no tech will touch my car if it's something i can fix.
