Hi!

Hi all, new here. I'm Ashley, I'm from CT but I go to school in MA. I don't actually have a 7, instead I have an MX-6, and a crashed Ford Probe.

The reason I'm on here is I wanna learn whatever I can about the wankel motors. You see, I have this crashed probe sitting here with no motor...no front end...just begging to be turned into a project.

Well I was tooling around the jy the other day and found a few 13B's. Well, that got me thinking, how awesome to have a 13B powered probe. So it's a project in the back of my mind. I'd be pulling the entire suspension and drivetrain setup from both cars and putting the rear end, motor and tranny from the 7 to the probe, fabbing up a custom driveshaft (I think the probes are longer) and doing a custom wiring harness, if not just using the 7 one.

Either way its gonna be a long time before this happens, but I'm all about the preparation and research, so here I am

About me...I just finished up a motor swap for my 6, took the original probe motor and trans and dropped it into the 6 since the old motor was blown. Runs like a champ

probe is a 95 gt 5 speed, power everything, odb1, only missing sunroof and leather int, which i got with my mx6.

there no motor, no tranny, and everything inbetween the fenders was cut except for the bottom crossmember, no rad support or anything. i crashed it into a telephone pole last sept and both airbags went off, cracking the dash, windsheild, effectively totalling it. wasnt reported to insurance since i didnt have comprehensive anyway, so the car just sits in my yard.

since i'm thinking about building a RWD 13B probe it's not for sale. and in order for it to be roadworthy you'd have to get a whole front clip for it anyway, hence why i just wanna strip it down to the chassis and tear it apart.

i do have a spare KLDE motor sitting with tranny with a blown headgasket...but everythings for sale for the right price.

anyway, heres some pics

I have a whole project site for my car: http://www.redpsycho3.com/project6/

Seems like a lot of work for not much gain, other then the fact that you can say that you did it. I'd say sell it all, use the money to buy an FD or an FC and go from there. They look way better then a probe. Props for the ambition anyway!

personally i like the styling of the probes better, plus i already have the shell, i've already located the motor and donor cars, and i kinda already have a place to do it.

and i love my car...dunno what gains you're talking about, on my 6 i didnt gain anything other then a running car, and on the probe the gain would be something never done before, as far as my knowledge, converting to rwd and the fact that yes, i did it myself.

i'm not on this forum looking to convert from a mx6/probe owner to an rx7 owner, my friend has an rx7 and its just not my cup of tea, but rather i'm on here to learn about the drivetrain and maybe get whatever answers i need as i move along with it.

You need a transmission tunnel to convert to RWD and the probe doesn't appear to have that. Having an engine swap under your belt is great, but body fabrication is an entirely different story. You're going to need some good welding skills, deep pockets for custom fabrication, and many MANY hours of planning.

In terms of gains you're looking at a 13b with 140ish horsepower vs a KL* with 160+ Horsepower. Not to mention torque.

Turbo motors, well you'd be hard pressed for space with an exhaust manifold that comes out away from the motor far enough to not hit the Lower intake manifold and still fit in the engine bay.

I still have to scratch my head with your motives for this project. I guess I'm just perfomance minded. If it doesn't improve the car, why do it? I'd say sac the probe and use the money for a more worthwhile project that won't cost as much.

If you need a FD motor, transmission, ecu, basically the entire drivetrain I can sell you mine for cheap.

lil sister? lol...

i'm not looking at performance upgrades at all, i'm not a pure horsepower type person, i like handling, i like uniqueness, even if that costs me money.

as far as fabrication, a friend of mine built his 4x4 from scratch, only thing left of the original jeep is the windshield. he made the frame, body, suspension, etc. he'd be doing the hard fabrication, the tunnel, welding the rear end etc.

and as far as the probe, i wouldnt be making any money from it anyway, so please don't diss my potential project, i know what i'm up against, and i'm working on answers. i came on here as a reference for when i do start it, it would be no trouble to me to go somewhere else.

thanks

Sorry, not trying to diss your project or anything. I thought just having one the few remaining Rx7's on the road was unique enough, what you're doing is just insanity to me

Good luck either way.

$2000 picked up includes transmission, driveshaft, etc.

Sorry for the thread jack and good luck on your project. But you would be better off starting on a better chasis. It seems like a lot of work for what you are trying to do. Are Probe's known for there handling (not being sarcastic, maybe you know something I don't).

My GT was the best handling car I've ever driven, and I've driven a lot. One of my friends, who races RWD cars, races on tracks and such, drove one and said it handled like a RWD. It's all how you set your suspension up.

Out of the box they're very good handling cars. And I didn't choose the car, I have it, so why not do something with it.

And by the way, Probes are actually Mazdas in disguise. Mazda designed the motor, tranny, chassis, suspension, etc.

Isn't any car going to handle good if you set the suspension up?

If you are doing this purely to try something different and experiment, then thats all cool..if you are trying to prove something or actually trying to make it handle or go fast, I would start with a different beginning point all together, it will be too much time and money...you can polish a turd all you want, but in the end, its still a turd. Good luck though.

My 95PGT handled great on the factory suspension. I've never been as comfortable behind the wheel as I was in my 95 PGT. My buddy blew the motor, but it's all good now. I want another one badly though.

On PT, I'm 95PGTR, but I rarely if ever am on that site any longer.

Are you building up the 6? CZT Tranny maybe? My dream is to have a 13B-REW swapped Probe and/or a PGT w/ CZT Tranny, boosted, etc

i'm not on PT anymore, i'm on PP and mx6.com

The 6 is my daily driver, so whatever I can do to the car without sacrificing that I'm planning on.

Either way, I'm done defending myself about this...I just came on here for whatever questions I'll have...so please stop saying find another base or whatever...

Then you should probably be posting in the "other engine conversion" section
