when's the next get together...i just got my 90 gxl auto a few weeks ago...
and i wanna take it to a public autocrossing event....i'm mad i just missed the 12 hours race

audi team goh won lemans. did you all hear that Dragon's Ridge has approval to be built Click here to read about it Could be good news for the area. Anyone going to the USGP this weekend? I'll be there.

I'm baaaack.
Travel and things have kept me away. I could not go last week. This week is busy too. I have my daughter's High School graduation tonite. Some other things the rest of the week.
I still want to see the freshly painted car. How about wednesday the 23rd of June. Pick the Hooters on General Booth? That is fine with me, even though I don't like the parking lot. About 7:00 PM? is that good with anyone else?
Ilesha, It is great to hear anyone save an early RX7. I know a few things about 79-80's. I gave one to a friend of mine. I think he still has the engine core from his car. He put a later engine in his car.
The early cars have different rotor housings with 2 exhaust ports in each housing. One is the main exhaust, and the other is some sort of heat riser thing that is used for emissions purposes. So unless you change the exhaust parts, you can't interchange engines between a 79 and 81-85 cars.
If you don't have the tools or don't want to do the rebuild yourself I'd sugges Hayes Rotary ( http://www.hayesrotary.com/ ) or Atkins Rotary ( http://www.atkinsrotary.com/ ) for rebuilt engines. I know people have had good success with RP-Performance which happens to be in Virginia, so it might save on shipping a whole engine ( http://www.rp-performance.com/ ).
But rebuilding a rotary is not all that hard to do. Atkins makes a helpful video tape that shows pretty much all you need. There are also some sources on how to take measurements etc available on the web. They are pretty simple actually. Rebuilding one can be fun I think. Granted it helps having a knowledgable person with you as you do it. There is also the pride factor of having done it yourself.
As far as collectibility.... Well RX7's don't bring large amounts of money right now. I think that might change some day, but don't count on it soon. But when they do, your car will be one of the most collectible. So maybe having matching numbers (it is only stamped on one of the engine plates) might add a little to the value.
If it were me, I would probably get the right rebuilt engine and replace the original one, but keep the original. Drive and enjoy the car as I wanted, and if it becomes highly valuable later you can sell the car with the original engine either in it, or with it, either rebuilt or not, and probably keep all the value you would have had. This is just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Thanks Calvin! I realize the car only has value to me right now but she is my baby. I am going to try to salvage the original engine if I can and go from there. I'll keep you all posted on our progress. Hope to have pics up soon(My daughters graduation is over, yippee!) I can't wait to get my hands in there and see what we come up with.

well from what i have heard/talked about is hopefully once they break ground the shifter cart track will be done within a year and then the road course in about 2-3 max and then housing etc to follow. But i think the goal is 2 years once started for the road course!

Get the video tape from Atkins. It is a huge help if you want to do the engine yourself. They are simple engines, there is just not much inside of them. Also got to MazdaTrix.com web site. Look in their FAQ and how-to section. They have several pages with helpful info on what can be used and what needs to be replaced. This page gives you info about how to identify good rotor housings from ones that need to be replaced.

Nope, not me. I have a normal number license plate with the lighthouses on it. My car is sorta all one color now. This pic is of my previous car that did have a red RF fender.
