what is your current transmission doing? The SE trans is unique. I have a few extras, but all of them need going through. You can use some 12A trans (it is best if you use an 84-5 12A trans, otherwise you are going to have some issues with the sensors on the trans. There is a 5th gear switch that signals to computer to go into a cruise mode where you get bettter cruising gas mileage.
You can tell the difference between the SE and 12A trans by the big vent hole on the side of the bellhousing. The gear ratios are also different on the SE. If you want to rebuild one, I have a couple. You might give Randy a call. I think he has some extra FB trans.
FWIW, I am currently parting out a GSLSE so if you need something let me know soon.

uhm transmissions a good way to test if they are ok if they are off the vehicle, check the color of the fluid also shift it through the gears while spinning the input shaft and listen to any noises or if the tail-shaft does in fact move
if anything doesnt look right i.e. metal in the fluid or the tailshaft doesnt spin while in gear then theres def something wrong
if you hear rough clicking and or feel binding while spinning the shaft then theres a good chance something is broken inside.
but knowing the friendly group of guys around here you buy the beer they will help ya lol

wel when i boutghtit from the guy he said it was making an knocking noise when he would hit like 45-50 mph but not from the engine. he says he took it somewhere and they told him it was the tran so he went and bought another one . he started working on it BUT then he got married so ther went his time for it. but the other trans was sitiing on the ground in the sand for about 4-5 months. besides that he said everything else is ok. just would like to meet some people who know more about these cars. and can help with any other bugs the car might have.
