Well... it was HOT and WET. Thats nice if you're with a lady, but it ain't no good if you're in the jungle... er at the track (Good Morning Vietnam)

First mention is the thunderstorm Friday night. The squall flattened my tent, so Steph and I took emergency measures - she hid in the truck as I took down our tent, Rick's canopy (mauled) - and I have to thank Chris for showing up just in time to help There was significant lightning for a LONG time. The aftermath looked like mother nature won.

Otherwise- karting Friday night was awesome. 30 minutes in a kart wore us out.

HPDE 3 is a significant step up from 2, but the sessions and traffic flowed MUCH better. My first session went well, getting used to running weird lines through turns while passing or being passed. Our second session was acompanied by instructors, which turned most of us into speed bumps pointing a lot (vette, vette, vette, Xavier... LOL). The course wasn't flowing for me yet, so I asked Xavier to ride along on my third. He introduced me to using car rotation as part of the course, and fixed a couple of corners I was pinching. It turns out the gators can be used to significantly rotate the car, maintaining more momentum than just using the track surface. The difference was dramatic, as I would catch people through sections they would normally leave me. LOTS of fun. Sunday dawned hot and only got hotter. The sessions were awesome, with either time trialer practice or instructors joining our group. All three sessions were fun, though the second one was aggravated by a civic and a bmw that didn't want to let anyone pass. My toyos now look shaved, and were getting greasy each session Sunday, so there was considerable sliding. Given the way the car rotated on command, I'm not going to be installing any rear sway bar as I had been thinking.

Xavier: Downshift to second to rotate the car.
VROOOM
Xavier: You didn't rotate the car.
Me: It has NO torque- I'll try lifting next time.
Vro... pop ... OOM
Me: Awesome!

I later found that if I hit second and trailbraked 14, I didn't need to lift, as the trailbraking rotated the car.

The car was running rather hot, so I regularly just went to 5th on the straight with part throttle to let her cool down a bit. I've been putting off an oil temp and real water temp gauge - it is time to add them. My wideband did some funky stuff - I hope it isn't dead. The Megasquirt didn't falter once. I noticed that I had more mid-range punch with the stock ECU, but this was to be expected. Peter and I made a conservative tune, and I have yet to do to a dyno. Judging by Shawn's dyno results, I expect great things.

My dad finally got an instructor that he didn't complain about. Coincidentally, he FINALLY found the momentum line, and was able to limit his understeer. He's threatening me with the next event. LOL

What a fun, exhausting weekend.

Yeah, I agree.... they are afterall sportscars, so they should be involved in sportscar racing. Is autocross.us broke right now or something? I got my confirmations this weekend to the MDA event in September. I might break down and get some tires between now and then.

BTW, did you see this:

Mazda Zoom Zoom Live

Well, if you went to the ZoomZoom Live event last year at FedEx Field and enjoyed it (Check our past event pictures, for photos and for a wtite up about the event read this: http://racecarstuff.com/?p=20 ) or you have been thinking about autocrossing but don't have a car ready to autocross, or don't want to use your car, well this is the event for you. You get to autocross brand new Mazdas in various events. Some are serious competition, others are very low key and fun. Anyone can compete, and you get to test drive the new Mazdas if you are thinking about getting a new RX8, or Mazdaspeed 6, or even the new CX-7 you will get to drive them in a performance environment. Best of all it is totally FREE and everyone leaves with some sort of prize in the form of a t-shirt or hat or something.

It is a great event, everyone that went last year had a great time.

When:
Sunday, August 13, 2006 at 8:00 AM
Where:
FedEx Field
One FedEx Way
Landover, MD 20785
888-888-8888
Notes:
Last year we had several of our members go up there. About half of the parking lot was performance Mazdas of one sort or another.

Ax.us is back up. It was dead for me as well.

I saw the zoom zoom thing, but I'll be in NY that weekend. I might have to drive by Watkins Glen while I'm up there

I've been looking at the MDA event for a while now. I'd love to go, but we might be moving then. I have to see exactly what is going on that weekend.

Bummer, gonna be a shame to see you leave. But you are going to be near Road Atlanta. I have heard that there are few track events at RA that "normal people" can attend. I have run the Shelby there with the old configuration of the track. I have not run the new sanitized, FIA safe track. The dip and the climb to Turn 11, and the rush down the hill to 12 was something that can't be described adequately.

Wow, sounds like fun. But right now I'm in a bit of bind. My son needs to start taking special injections from the doc at $1.3k a pop, once or twice a month for 6 months. AND insurance is being a PITA about paying for it. So car stuff is REALLY on the back burner right now. Though, I did get an offer for sidework. We'll see how it goes!

Anyone going to Langley Wednesday 8/2 ? I found out that Jake ran last week in his "turbo Brick":

http://hamptonroadsrotaryclub.com/fo....php?p=452#452

But he says he'll be running his GSLSE this week.

Matt, Kenny, you guys get cars together for this week.....

I am 50-50 on being able to make it, but I am going to try. If I don't, I will be there the following Wednesday with a good possibility that I will be running.
