I see this made it here...The report is the operator used remote start to start the car, the car took off he jumped in it in efforts to stop the vehicle.
I was there with the Fire Department as its our Fire District...

If it was in fact an LS1 it makes sense.
If the car is in gear it will crank over @ 800RPMs which is enough to get the car moving slowly.
The LS1 probably has a high idle at start maybe 2K for the first 10-15 seconds, which is enough to make some speed.......
I feel bad for the guy an all, and I am glad no one was hurt.

Really though, this does suck. I feel bad for the owner it looked like a really nice car from what you can see through the water...
Very true that someone could have been easily hurt and I am really glad that there were no injuries other than those sustained by the poor driver trying to save his car.

And a few audio shops I've been to told me that its illegal for them to EVEN work on....
But I think its the same type of illegal as passing your inspection test.
- the hood is open
- car is out of neutral
- if the e-brake is down
But I did hear horror story's of remote starts without these features.

I have remote starter on my FD and my subaru both with manual tranny. I always leave them in neutral with ebrake on so normally it's not a problem. But my friend drove my subaru once and left it in gear with ebrake not very tight, I remote started it the next day and it drove itself into my garage door almost hitting my rx7 in the garage. Another time same thing happened after my gf's dad drove my subaru, I started it in a parking lot and jumped in through the back door that was open to grab the ebrake to stop the car when it started driving away, luckily didn't hit anything. Ya I really need to wire it into the nuetral safety switch if that's possible. Luckily this guy didn't kill anyone.

I almost lost two fingers working on a car with remote start. It was a front drive maxima...I was under the car unbolting the r/h axle flange with the keys in my pocket. The hood was open and the owner never informed me of the remote start. Car wasnt labeled in the engine bay either. Long story short...I must have leaned on the keys in my pocket while pulling myself out from underneath by the crank pulley when the car started and took my left hand with it. One trip to Elmhurst Hospital and nine stitches in my index finger later I found my self using the same hand to beat the **** out of the customer that same night. It was a long day to say the least...lol!

Dude that sucks! Reading this thread, it would appear that setting the auto start the same way "sinned2545" did is the safest way to go for everybody.

I also had a remote start in a previous manual car that would keep the engine running until driver's door was closed so it "knew" the car was still in neutral. If the e-brake wasnt on it would diasble or then if any door was opened after that it would not remote start. Cant remeber the brand but at the time it was the only remote start specifically designed for a manual trans car.
At least the launch wasn't caught on video or it would live on like the autocross disaster:

Anyone who installs a remote start on their manual car with NO safety features is a moron.
Like sinned said, the car shouldnt start if the car is in gear (even though MANY people like to leave their car in gear when parked, like me), if the e-brake is up, or other safety feature like hood open (like sinned said).
If you just install a remote start on your manual car as if it was auto, then i think you deserve the consequence.
I cant count how many times i have unlocked/locked or opened my trunk because of having the keys in my pocket. The other keys on my key ring probably hit the buttons as i move along. Thats probably what happened to this FD owner. Maybe he was sitting down and his other keys pressed the start button on his remote.
Remote start is a dumb mod anyway, for a manual car IMHO.
Many people recommend leaving your car in gear when parked. And if you do that, defeats the purpose of having a remote start. And if you built the habit of doing that, you might find yourself in a mess like this FD owner if you do get a remote start in the future. ITs better not having it at all.
Im not saying the FD owner deserves what he got to him. But i think he should've known better.
