What are your thoughts on an RX-8?
I am thinking about getting a newer daily driver and was looking at my options. Wanted something fun to drive and prefer backseats (just in case I would need them, no kids...yet). Was thinking about getting a 2010/11 RX-8 GT. At this price point "the boss" will let me keep the FB. But it would be nice if the new car can replace the FB for autox and possibly a track day or two.

I had a friend with a lightly modded RX-8(RB springs, sway bars, Tokico D-Spec dampers, LW flywheel & Underdrive, RB Exhaust) and it was just a blast. It just hugged the road and felt more solid the faster I went. He never had any issues with it, but he also worked at Mazda as a tech for the entire time he owned it.

Hopefully Jack chimes in since he owns one.
Other then that, from what I've seen they are pretty decent cars in terms of driving. They actually handle an AutoX pretty well. Nate Atkins has had one for a while at CDC and he seems to really like it. You should start showing up to AutoX's again, I'm fairly certain he'd let you drive it on course if he knows/remembers you. He's offered me to drive it before but I haven't taken him up on it yet.
My concern for having one as a daily driver would be directly dependent on how many miles you'd put on it in a day. If it is under 40-50. I'd do it, if it is much more then that you might have problems with gas prices and eventually reliability.

Mazdaspeed3. Super fun car, torque makes it feel like a fast car, gets better MPGs, has the back seats, can tow lots of parts when your FB breaks. It responds well to mods unlike the rx8.... Oh, and you can tell her its "practical"

I have a Speed 3 as my daily, I love it. Really want to get a second gen one. Wonderful car. Quick as hell and the gas mileage isn't too bad. Could be better, but it's a big 4 cylinder.

I thought about getting an RX-8, but the wife says it doesn't count as a 4 door
Apparently you can get them pretty cheap if you can find one with "a blown engine" that's actually just flooded or has some other easily fixable issue.

Going to the test & tune on 10/26.
Don't really want something I would have to work on right away. I want to enjoy it as being a newer car with all the creature comforts (including a working engine). I was thinking this car would be a DD for a couple years, then stripped into a track car.
As for the speed3, ehh I thought about it and decided "no".
MPGs are of no concern. If they were, I would just keep driving the Saturn sc2 (34ish mpgs) and not get anything.

The Saturns transmission is going to crap the bed soon. So at that point it won't be worth it to me to fix it.
It should be noted for practicality, I will still have:
2014 Impreza (wife's car)
1992 Cherokee for the snow

Wes - The eight is a fun car to drive. Series I (04-08) are more issues with reliability in the first two years. The Series II(09-12) are almost a completely new car. Motor was redesigned, bigger oil filter, oil injector added. Rear suspension redone etc. Urethane filled frame rails for some models etc. So it would be the "better" of the two.
It's biggest downside is mileage. 15 -16 city is normal, 21 22 highway is what I have seen. Throw in a small tank (say 12 gallons usable) it has short expensive legs. Series I have huge issues with plugs and coils. Replacing them every 20k is not a bad idea.
Plus side it is blast to drive. I have yet to find it's limits. Yes it has no torque and gets smoked on straights. But turns you will keep up with just about anybody.

I haven't had the opportunity to drive an 8 at its limits yet but I will say last year at DGRR in my e46 m3 with michelin PSS, the hardest car to lose on the Dragon was a yellow rx8 and not the FD's lol. I was really impressed considering the massive power advantage the M had.

Picking up a running FC this weekend for under $1000! Car looks to be in good shape with 206k miles, but the interior says otherwise(really really clean). Crossing my fingers it makes the 2 hour drive home. Current owner says he is confident the car will do it, as he's done multiple 6 hour drives no issue...
Just to be safe:
jumper cables
spark plug wrench
10 12 14 16 17 19 21mm sockets
2 cycle oil
10w-30 oil
gallon of water
jack
anything else you'd bring?

Any of you local guys know how to use the RTEK 2.1 systems proficiently? I just picked one up and haven't installed it yet. But want to know if anyone is knowledgeable enough to help a noob out.

This one will be my wife's toy so I can try to justify spending money on more RX7 parts
I had already picked up a 91 shell to drop a T2 motor in. Turns out getting the S4 ECU to play nice with the S5 dash stuff is a bit more then PNP so I sold the shell for $100 less than I paid with the interior stripped since the new owner doesnt need it for his drift mobile project. In the end I'm going from a non running car, to a complete running car and an easier T2 swap for a total cost of $200.

Hi guys. I have an 82 that I have owned for about 25 years and have no time to devote to it any more other than start it every few weeks and drive it around. I want to pass it on to someone interested in restoring or parting it out. let me know if you are interested and I will post some pictures. I would rather pass it on to someone who is interested in restoring it.
In summary, it has a working Atkins Rotory street ported 12A with about 30K miles on it, sloted and drilled rotors, Mind spring exhaust system including headers, cat replacement pipe and muffler (needs new muffler), Racing Beat lowering springs, upgraded ignition system and wires, fairly new tires with a lot of thread left, etc. etc.
I live in Gaithersburg. Please PM me if interested in seeing it.
