Anyone have a use for old servers? for free? (Maryland)
So I have some older server equipment that is end of life (old.) To have it disposed of through an e-waste company costs me money and they just crush it to bits and recycle the materials. I tried to sell the last batch and it was more trouble than it was worth. Maybe i can give them away to someone who might have a use for them.
If you know of anyone who might want them, here is what i have:
1 dell PE2650, 2 1650's, 2 1750s, a 2 drive PV136-T tape library, 6 PV220s split backplane scsi arrays, mostly full of 36 or 72gb drives. Bunch of sdlt tapes. All have rack mount hardware. Maybe more of the same vintage servers..
Let me know quick. I'll be getting quotes next week to dispose of the stuff.
It's all located in Rockville, MD. You haul.

Would you be able to? Sure. They run on 110-220v and take standard perhiherals. Would you want to? Probably not. Main reason being that noise isn't a concern in a datacenter. They are louder than you would want in a house. The disks are small-ish for the flat files that you would stick on them. That said, they would run forever and I have enough spare disks so that when they failed you could just pop another one back in and let it rebuild.
Seriously, if you are considering some kind of home server we can talk about options... but it probably wouldn't include these things.

Heh datacenter stuff is loud.
Back in the day, I had an Artecon raid chassis in my house under my desk. Everyone asked why I had a vacuum cleaner running somewhere they could hear. Dual power supplies, I think 9 disks... etc... tons of fans.
