The smartest thing you can do is have the car thoroughly inspected by a highly respected rotary specialist in your area. Basically do your homework and make sure you know everything there is to know about the car PRIOR to purchasing it. A good solid car shouldn't give you too many problems... A lot of the problems forum members face (I'd even argue the vast majority) isn't b/c of the cars...it's b/c we're all trying to save a buck or two here or there and are trying to do the work ourselves...so it's either half-assed, cutting corners/costs, or simply not the best due to lack of experience - specifically w/ FDs.

I'd also venture to say that most FD's built by professional shops/builders have little if any problems despite being nicely modded...

ie; if you don't know what you are doing or can't afford to fix the car, don't buy one

All you need to do is find one for about a grand, put in new battery, change the plugs, and change out the fluids and don't worry about it.
That's what i did.

I kinda lucked even more, I'm getting inspected this week and it turns out needs new front brake rotors, fortunately the PO gave me a new set of rotors (still in their boxes) with the car - I did have to go out and buy a new set of front pads though

PURE LUCK
the GF is a system admin for a telecom company, she was updating computers and found an RX7 folder on one of the engineers computers, asked him about it - 2 months of him dicking around later I bought the car
it had sat in his garage for at least 3 years
she was a bit moldy - white vinegar rub down and time in the sun fixed that
I had towed home swapped the battery over from my 325is to see if it would crank over and the bitch fired right up
then right around Xmas I got to the bottom of the 3 year old gas and fould the plugs
this past weekend I put new plugs in (after much cursing and bleeding) and changed the oil and cleaned and reoiled the K&N filters for the Petit Racing intake.
So the only major peice of equipment I've had to buy is the Odessy PC1200 drycell battery
the car also has a Peter Farrell catback exhaust, Petit Racing AST, and an aftermarket intercooler thats just a little larger than stock
oh and all the vacuum lines have been replaced with high temp silicone lines

so my advice is to get a GF that works in a major telecom company as a system admin

I'd barely brake even with what I've spent so far.
