I don't even know why it's up for debate. Anyone who has had an alt belt come loose while driving would clearly notice that when the fan isn't making any noise (or the belt is screeeeeaming) the engine revs noticably quicker esp. in lower gears.

One dyno test had a flex fan (no clutch) drawing 44hp. Moved a lot of air but 44hp! Most clutch fans were in the 16-20hp range.

I'll have an electric fan or no fan at all, thanks.

Well, true to my word on the first page...

That is truly amazing. Finally, after all these years, someone put the e-fan v. stock fan argument to rest.
Thanks

now the only question is- Does anyone have a good link to a decent e-fan mod tutorial that INCLUDES a thermostat?

I'm thinking about buying a stock e-fan from an automatic but am wondering if any modification would be required to get it to shut off when it's not needed?

BTW- I have done a full-synth upgrade on my tranny/rear end and it is NOTICABLE, and also (not for horsepower...) a strut bar and new urethane sway bar bushings are incredible improvements in handling power
Can't wait to get all the rest of the bushings installed!!!

I found some simple installing fans at my local parts store after a long research period- the fan and thermostat cost about $100. The thermostat comes with a relay- you have battery power and ground and battery + ignition and the thermostat wire and a ground for your fan. It was actually pretty simple once I found an ignition positive circuit to splice into- I used the ignition coils black/yellow wire and it seems to be fine- as a matter of fact it is a noticeable gain- even my girlfriend said the car felt more "efficient" which I am sure was a reference to how quickly it accelerates now. 0-60 used to be between 8-9 seconds and I have shaved a whole second off of that now.
The maker of the fan is Hayden under the moniker 'imperial', but I am sure there are others.

Installing an Efan is not rocket science...each new electric fan comes with specific directions on how to wire it and how to mount it. The aftermarket electronic fan controllers also come with specific directions.

If you choose to go old-school-modify or use some OEM fan off of another make than Mazda, hit up the tech section for your particular generation RX-7 and you'll find a slew of threads from those that have "been there, done that" with specifics you can use...just use the search engine and type in "electric fan" and then launch the torpedoes.
..

I recently installed a first gen MR2 electric fan (dual fans) and hooked my vacuum advance backup. One or both of these changes netted me ~3+ mpg. I can definitely feel the extra ponies but I've never dynoed it. I went from 22 mpg to 25 mpg cruising at 70 to 80 mph.

My setup is an 80 SA, stock port 12A, RB Dellorto intake, RE header and exhaust, 2GDFIS, 82 12A flywheel, Centerforce II clutch/pressure plate, timing set at RB recommended settings for the Dell.

The fans are on all the time right now, but I plan on fixing that with a proper thermo switch soon. I expect to gain some small amount of power at cruise and maybe a noticable increase in mpg. Not that mpg is really a priority for me.

Next I'm going to replace my dual Facet fuel pumps with a 7 psi pump and a return regulator so I can dial up the pressure to the max. I feel like a little more pressure could help the top end some. Also plan on playing with the zero split on the trailing.

Keep this thread going, its great to see all the ideas coming.

Get something minimum 1600cfm. The more you can fit the better.

Other than that, it's not even tutorial-worthy unless you need a tutorial for tying your shoes or opening a door or putting gas in your car.

Step 1: Remove clutch fan.
Step 2: Install electric fan according to mounting instructions included with fan.
Step 3: Drive it

tell you something I've noticed since the install- my fan doesn't even come on unless I am at a stop for 5+ minutes- and it will go off about 30 seconds after I start moving- that shows how much wasted air is moving around from a stock fan- that has to equal gas or hp somewhere- even when you take into account the alternator's new added load on the engine!

most electric fans wont come on unless your driving low speeds or idling for a while, open road driving they shouldnt come on unless your thrassing it which means better gass mileage aswell!

Well, the Derale fan, combined with the Wizard aluminum radiator, has basically allowed the Efan just to stay off, period, this whole winter...it's been on a couple of times during some of the morning traffic jams with multiple wrecks, but basically has been a lump on the radiator since last Fall...

Right now, I can start up the car, drive to work on surface roads then I-20 to Loop 12 North to surface streets to my work in Pinnacle Park in Dallas and the Efan never comes on at all...now that we're finally warming up, that's going to change, of course. Oh, all the gas I must've been saving so far.

try sneeds speed shop, comes with fan, shroud, relay, and thermostat for $198. You do have to cut the shroud and drill holes for installation but that's it. Wiring is straight forward with the directions. Since we're talking performance, if I remove emissions, then i will be running on four ports instead of six, right? So what are the pros and cons of removing emissions? #7 make a test pipe that can be installed for your main cat after already removing your precat's. When you go for inspection, just put it back on or have friends that get you by with no hassle.

Depends if you have an S4 or S5, and if you retain the airpump. If you have an S4, use an rpm switch to activate the 6PI. If you have an S5, keep the airpump. If you ditch it, you'll have to use two rpm switches, one for the 6PI and one for the VDI, or use one switch and bridge the two together.
