EGT range?? What gauge?

I am going to get an EGT gauge for my street ported NA 86. Is a gauge that goes to 1600/1650 F high enough or do I need one that goes to 2000 F?

I will be putting the probe 4-6 inches from the exhaust ports.

Opinions of those with NA cars and EGT gauges appriciated.

since you should tune for 1750 F you will need something more than the 1600 variety.

i raced normally aspirated for 6 years... SCCA GT3. (1750 in top gear at max speed)

I've got one like this. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pro...asp?RecID=4861

Westach brand.

Howard the rule of thumb us 12a guys use in EP is not to go over 1700. Now that's with a street ported motor, not the bridge you would use in GT3. I do have a hard time keeping the rear rotor under 1700 on rovals.

What is EP?

I use the Computech egt-plus. Awesome EGT meter and has instant response time. Also, when using carbon apex seals you don't want to push the Egt too high or they will be prone to chipping or cracking. Although I have pegged my meter at 1800 with the carbons before, but you don't want to do that very often.

Generally speaking, does the rear rotor run hotter than the front? I'm not going to tune the car to the ragged edge, so I am considering running just one probe for EGT.

That said, I want to put the probe on the rotor that runs hotter.

generally speaking, yes, the rear rotor will run hotter and you should put your probe on that one.

And if you really want the big picture use the two sensor guage that I mentioned above. One sensor for the front rotor and one for the rear with one module/display unit, instant response time, what else could you want?
