Clearancing for high RPM

Hi, I have a S5 block I wanted to PP and build for road racing and was wondering if anybody has any links or any thing with advice on tolerances for an engine to run at 9000+ RPM, any advice will be helpful.

Well you definitely want to balance the complete rotating assy at a high reputable shop. You also want to clearance the rotors. There are many shops that can do this, Racing Beat is one of them but there are many others. Apex seals will have to be either carbons or ceramics because they need to be lightweight. Both will have different clearances. The carbons expand more than ceramics when hot, thus they will use a looser clearance. RacingBeat also has the clearances and whichever brand apex seal you use, they will also give you a recommended clearance for their seals. Other than that you want to use hardened stationary gears and race bearings for stationary gears and rotors. You also need to upgrade the oiling system. Do a search for "oil mods" in the single turbo forums and race forums as there is many good threads on this that it would take me too long to go into detail. Other than that make sure you get a good scattershield to protect you and fellow racers/spectators. That should get you started.

the easy way is to buy new rotors, since 2006ish they have all come side clearanced, as the Rx8 has this done stock.

so you can actually look at the stock Rx8 clearance, and just use that for the FC block...

You increase the clearance on the sides and the faces of the rotors so that when the e-shaft begins to flex at elevated RPMs that there is no rotor contact with the irons or rotor housings. You should also look into balancing.

To the OP, I recommend giving Mandeville a call, since you're located on the eastern side of the country. He can get you straightend out on all the work you'll need to have done. He's priced reasonably and has very quick turn around. In addition to the mentioned clearancing and balancing, you'll want to look into the "race" deep groove bearings for the rotors and multi-window main bearings. Bearing tolerance becomes more critical with high rpm builds as well.

I'll also add, budget from the start for an SFI rated flywheel, clutch assembly, and a scatter shield. Goopy is now producing scattershields. It only take one clutch explosion to ruin your day.
