My FD has been stolen! 1993 MB Touring

Yep...after only two months of ownership my FD has been stolen. I came back from the grocery store last night and noticed that it was not parked where I had left it. I thought maybe it had been towed for some reason, so I called the police, but they had no record of it being towed...so we're assuming it's been stolen. I've filed a police report but I'd like to ask everyone here to please keep an eye out for it. It is a 1993 touring model, montego blue in color (it's actually faded to more of a green color), with an R1 front lip and a big front mount intercooler. Other distinguishing features are the fact that the RX-7 badge is missing on the rear of the car, the calipers are painted red, and there's a big scratch in the passenger side headlight cover. It had around 98000 miles when I last saw it. It most likely will have no plates or a Colorado temp tag. Thanks and please post or PM me if you see it, online or in person...

P.S. - The car is as follows:

http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/842471725.html

Yes I put up that ad...I had been considering selling it due to a harsh financial situation, but I just got a good job so now I can keep it, if I can find it

VIN number is JT3HN86R1X0221484. I know most any thief could just swap vin plates but I'm pretty sure it's stamped into the firewall on these cars too...

Sucks man. I'm always worried about mine, if it's still going to be where I left it. And yes, there's a vin stamped into the top middle of the firewall.

Thanks for the help Mike! Unfortunately it's all too likely that this car is possibly outside the Denver area, already being parted out and then junked...and whoever stole it is most likely already aware that people are looking for it. I can only hope that I will get back what I paid from my insurance company.

I removed the CL ad in the first post so that people won't think the person who stole it is trying to sell it. I put up a stolen ad on craigslist instead. And here are some pictures:

Did you post your adress on the for sale add? OR maybe give some people the adress to come take a look at it?

SOmeoNE knew you were going to be gone to the grocery. Or atleast knew they would have enough time.... WHo all knew you were leaving the 7 at the house alone?

I feel for you bud.

In puerto rico, they have all kind of gadgets because of the high vehicle theft thats has been going on forever.

They have a device where you place a button right next to the foot pedals and the car wont start.(not sure how it works) The idea is for the owner to be the only one that knows. And when you get out of the car you click it with your foot and wala noone can start it. ANd when you get back in you click the button again and crack away. Noone will ever see you adjusting anything because its by your feet. My uncle had it and even if you knew it was there is was kinda hard to see.

HE also used to take the egi fuse out of his other car everytime he wasnt in it.

The address wasn't posted in the ad. I never gave out my address, and nobody knew where I was going but me. I figure somebody has been watching the car for a while now and noticed that I was the owner, and also that rarely ever moves, then just waited for me to be gone to ****** it. In fact only one person contacted me about the car and even that was just to tell me I was asking too much. (Could be a lead but not likely.) The reality of this theft hit me today, so sickening

Don't give up hope yet. I don't think there's a huge parts market for RX-7's, so there's a good possibility that it's still in the Denver area. My brother's TII was stolen in Albuquerque in February. We thought it would be long gone, but it showed up last month in a junkyard. Apparently it was being used locally as a drift car.

Well since I can't edit my post for some reason...I'm making a new one to say that I made a mistake with the VIN number in the original post. The actual VIN number is JM1FD3316P0204963.

You can't edit a post after a certain amount of time. I can't remember how long that is though.

One nice thing about the rx7 owners and others that come to meets, they will do there best to find it for you....dan

The Craigslist ad isn't working or gone for me. What color is it?

I'll be watching out up north in Loveland and Fort Collins

Well, what do you know! I got a call from the Aurora police last night saying that they had found my car. Apparently the thieves took it to an apartment complex and parked it illegally. The complex called a tow truck, who called the police, who told the driver it was stolen. I'm going to the impound lot tomorrow...I just hope it wasn't abandoned due to a blown engine. The officer couldn't tell me anything about the condition of the engine bay / whether or not parts were ripped out, because the doors were locked. If it's not running, I have no idea what I'll do with it...obviously not going to put it back out on the street. Anyone got some garage space I can use temporarily?? (I'll pay)

I'm going to try to take off work early today so I can go look at it and see if it's even driveable...hopefully the thieves were dumb and just took it for a few joyrides. The stupid thing about this though is that since I live in Denver and the car was recovered in Aurora, they're going to charge me $150 to pick it up! Anyway, thanks for looking out everyone.

AWESOME! Well IMO a $150 is better than loosing your car all together. I'll pray that the engine is still good and the parts still there.

That's bogus they make you pay for something taken away from you illegally. Hopefully they didn't rip parts off it or tear it all to hell. At least it was found.

Well my intuition was right. I saw it last night...it's not in terrible condition, but it's certainly seen better days. The interior was filthy; the thieves had definitely been smoking in it because I found a few old packs of cigarettes. They scraped the Mazda badges off and there are scratches all around where the badges were. The hood doesn't close right, I think they tried to modify it somehow so that it would let more air in. And it doesn't start. It could possibly just be flooded, but my guess is they blew an apex seal or two. It just cranks endlessly and there's a strong smell of gas when it cranks. These guys had ***** though...they were treating it as if it was their car, driving it around like they weren't even going to get in trouble. They even did work on it! They rigged up some kind of crazy overflow tank for the coolant, and I found directions for installing a new thermostat in the car. I didn't think to check the oil but the coolant in that rigged up overflow tank looked milky. They were definitely running it hard and probably just left it where it was when it didn't start. Anyway...all the documents were still in the car; title, registration, and probably bill of sale (I haven't checked yet). My insurance company is going to come pick it up today and tow it to their salvage yard, where an appraiser will come assess any damages done. I am assuming that since he will know nothing about the car, they're going to have me take it to a shop and find out how much it costs, but we'll see. My local insurance agent is a great guy and I'm sure he'll help me out. Hopefully I will be able to get a new engine / turbos / whatever out of the deal, plus some to repair the damaged areas around where the badges were. I'm just glad I got the car back! I'm so lucky...I would have sworn it was being parted out or on its way to Mexico. Well, I'm trying to make the best of it...the way I see it, this is just a great opportunity to redo the FMIC and radiator to run cooler at higher altitude. And maybe build a 20b

They'll first try to total the car and give you as little as possible. Be stubborn and don't just take their offer if you think it's not fair. Once they've done their assessment, you might have to take the car to a mechanic that you trust and have them do an estimate on the car's value and the cost of repair. It's unfortunate, but that's the way insurance companies work. You will probably have to fight for what you deserve here.

I hope you don't have St. Farm! They are the worse for ripping off their clients. I'm glad you got the car back man!

I doubt they would be able to total the car, last I checked blue book was still around 12k and there certainly isn't 12k worth of damage to it. And no I don't have St. Farm, I have Farmer's / Bristol West, don't know if that's what you meant. But yeah, I'm prepared to fight for what I deserve here. They are kind of being a pain so far, they said that someone would call me when my car was towed, but nobody ever did. I haven't heard from them since Friday and have no idea if my car is still in the impound lot or what. I'm going to have to stay on top of this or nothing is going to be done...but I intend to get some money out of it no matter how long it takes. It's bad enough the thieves won't be brought to justice, but now I have to wait who knows how long to get the car fixed. In short, car thefts suck!

Check with your insurance company or your policy, you may be entitled to a rental car for the time that you can't use your car. If they're paying for a rental car while you wait, that shouldl help to motivate them to get your case closed.
