who will tune my fc in chicagoland??

I'm a newbee when it comes to EMS and have an 87 fc with microtech fuel mgmt. I'm willing to learn if this can be done in the garage, but would like some input from local shops that know what they are doing? I live in Carol Stream, IL (zip 60188) and know of only one shop (a-spec tuning in Schaumburg ) that is rotary specific. Two other local shops said they can't/ don't know how to tune rotary, so what are my options? Can I tune my own ems? who can help with this in my area??? Any feedback would be much appreciated!!

except Aspec doesnt like to work on the FC

they see the FC and FB as the poor mans RX7 and besides, for a rotary shop would you really want to take it to a rotary shop that has put V8s into rx7s? I think not

but still they do alot of good work.

+1 for STEVE. F those people at A-spec I gave them my irons to lapp them I got them back after 100 phone calls and 3 months they had not lapped them and they chipped my water jacket and said that's the way it came in (was the only spot on them that wasnt dusty)

I live in Bartlett if you ever need anything let me know I have ALL parts and more experience with the FC than most people in chicago area. Just check my signature links.

Just drive to St Louis get an appointment with STEVE. cant believe he is going to be so close and my car is not done yet!

Hi Guys,
This is Ryan from A-spec. I came here to clarify a couple of things in this thread.. first off, we dont think the FC owners are "poor mans rx7 owners" its quite the opposite. You must understand FC parts are hard to get and take long to get due to the old age. The fact is a good portion of the owners get scared off when we show them Mazda prices for rotary parts and what not (even FD owners!) The FC RX-7 is roughly 20 years old and alot of parts need to be replaced and parts can be pricey!. To this day,We have done numerous FC builds/turbo kits/fuel systems/IC etc....

another thing is that our tune fee INCLUDES Dyno time on our DynoJet and basic diagnostic time (check for leaks, compression check) and replacement of important parts (plugs, wires, oil, filter, etc) Please understand we get cars that were told us "all it needs is a tune" and when we strap the car down on the dyno the car has SERIOUS issues that need to be addressed before hand. (we have even got blown RX-7s on our dyno that supposedly just needed to get "tuned") We want cars to be in near perfect shape before putting them through the intense stresses of a tune, plain and simple. Please dont forget the last RX7 was here in '95 which was 11-12 years ago, even our 8sec starlet we spend alot of time on going over numerous checks and replacement of parts when we test out different turbos on the dyno.

Yes we have installed LS1's in RX-7's. If the customer wants somethinig done and we could achieve it, we as a business will take the job. An LS1 in a RX-7 is actually a fun car.

We have been in business for 5-6 years now and been sponsoring this forum and donating to local events for about the same time..starting from a small location to now with our 6000sq ft building in Schaumburg with our own dyno room, engine clean room, full fabrication area, offices, gated lot, etc... The booming growth that we've had is not by accident as we do try our best to satisfy our local and mailorder/internet customers. We have numerous repeat customers and referals from all around the world. We even get rotary cars subleted to us from dealers for work on there rotary customers! Im sure we have dissapointed some potential customers and have had some bad relationships along the way but all iin all our referal rate is quite large.

i hope this clarifys any rumor or talk.

Heres a list of other shops off the top of head. Please give a ring to our local rotary competitors to see if they can take care of your tuning needs: (dont i sound like a progressive insurance commercial )

1. www.driftavenue.com
2. www.mazdausa.com (put in your zip code)
3. www.drautosports.com
4. www.banzairacing.net
5. JH racing? (dont know if they have a site)

im not sure of any others but im sure any shop should be able to help you out.

thanks for reading and understanding

Very professional ryan you have come a long way since Addison. I will never speak a good word about your shop not now not ever. I will continue to tell everyone about my experience with you whenever your name pops up or anyone local is looking for a GOOD shop.

I owned a restaurant for 4 years and I have to thank Ryan because every time I had a complaint I thought about the way I was treated at A-spec and I made certain that my customers didn't walk away feeling cheated or violated. So thanks Ryan for giving me the tools I needed to make MY business better.

Lol your too funny. No way would any plates have sat here for 3 months untouched please. They are turned out in 7-10 days never any more. I've done only two sets of plates on motors we haven't built. One REW for a FD, one BP-12a. If your plate was "chipped by us" we would have replaced it at our cost. That is the way we do things. Rob is building your motor?? Funny he recommends us all the time, and we recommend him all the time.
Ryan is new and has been helping here for only a few months so no need to thank him I think I remember you. You were the guy who said no rush on your parts, then three days later on a friday tried starting a fight in the front of our shop with one of our employees because THREE DAYS was taking too long. What was that three years ago?? Now you pop up with this claim?? As far as how to treat customers I'll keep doing what I'm doing. My family has been in the restaurant business, on Randolph street downtown since 1902. I think we know a thing or two about customer service. Both in Rotary shops and in your field. 104 years of experience of customer service in fact We know we can't make everyone happy, no-one can, however, while all these other shops are closing doors or joining in with others we are growing and expanding. Good luck with what you do. But stop with the BS trash talk. People who know us, know better.

well I have nothing to say other than to restate the facts. I was told a couple weeks (while you were in Australia) and three weeks later I asked if they were done and was told that you were currently looking for a new place to have them done. several more weeks went by and I asked again still hadnt found a new place. I was wrong about them not being done, I just found the receipt it was $200 and it was three months later. When I came in to pick them up I pointed out to you that the plate was chipped and you said "we didnt do that, must have been there already" I had a fit and you told me to leave. I probably told you to F yourself and your mother (that is the way I usually respond to being F'ed in the ***) and then left. So I might have let this be but since you persist I will be forced to follow your name through the forum PM'ing people about my experience with you so they can make an informed decision with facts about both the good experiences of people and the bad.

And as for the thanks they go to you then instead of Ryan. Though that still means that your idea of customer service is "we are the only shop around who else are you gonna go to" and Ryans detailed list of shops in the "area" PROVES that this is your philosophy.

FOR ALL WHO WANT TO KNOW:
they didn't (still don't?) do their own machine work, they farm it out and charge a premium to do so. Just ship your stuff off yourself to any number of shops across the country that do their own work.

You are still wrong, you were not waiting for me to get back from australia to do anything with plates it was a diff you flipped out about. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. Plates would have never sat here for 3 months NEVER, HAVE NEVER WILL. 7-10 DAY turn around. I have never had a plate chipped from a lapping either NEVER. If we damage anything we pay for it. ALWAYS HAVE ALWAYS WILL. You never once said anything at the time about this plate issue. You can follow me around all you want to, Don't know about you but I have better thing to do with my time. peoples experience here speaks for themselves. Also.... "Since I persist"??? Give me a break, Ryan comes in and clarifies a few things and you jump back in again. Then I need to come in here and set you straight. Who is persisting??(hint you) Who is having to make sure both sides are heard??(hint me?) Ryan recommending other shops doesn't prove anything. We recommend other shops all the time. We always have and we've posted it numerous times. Like I said anyone who knows this place, knows better. I file you under lost cause, can't do right by you no matter how hard we try. That makes you number 3 in 5+yrs horrible track record we got going there. Now please just go work on your car. Have fun with it or whatever.

FOR ALL WHO WANT TO KNOW:

YES I DO NOT OWN A LAPPING TABLE. That means nothing. No big secret there!!! You were told that when you came in, as is everybody. I do own a lot of other machining equipment and because you haven't been to the new shop or the old one for that matter in over 3 yrs You couldn't again be more wrong. Lets see, Vertical mill, gravity fed bandsaw. Numerous sanding disks and belt sanders, two 400amp tig welders. Drill press's and I actually have two CNC's in the family if and when needed. Though they are not "in house". We wouldn't want you to be misinformed

I've been a customer of A-Spec's for 3-4 years now, and actually even before I was a customer and was just looking at cars/parts and plans, Sean and Steve bent over backwards to help me whenever possible. I had a million questions all of which were answered with what I feel was in my best interest, not in theirs, and the same goes for any advice I needed on mods based on the direction I wanted to take my car.
I have never spent a dollar at their shop that I later looked back on and said that's not what I wanted, asked for, or felt as if I'd wasted it. These guys as well as all the guys that work for them will treat you with the utmost respect and I haven't been treated otherwise. In the end it will be up to the people reading this to decide for themselves how to feel, but I wanted to step in to at least lighten up this negative shadow that seems to be cast on them by this thread.

I am sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle of the two stories. Anytime and I do mean anytime someone says "7 - 10 days NEVER more" you know that cannot be true. Things happen..they always do..and always will....anybody who has expercience w/ sending parts out knows this. I know this is just speculation on my part..but I truly feel that A-spec ran into problems w/ his order, probably beyond there control, but did not turn his order in the 7 - 10 day time frame.

The only way it would be longer than 7-10 days is if the place I have lap them took longer. They don't, they guarantee delivery and their work. So in 5yrs I have never had anything take longer than 10 days for them to do. The place is over 100,000sq/ft. It is all they do. If I can't get the plates picked up then it could take longer, it hasn't yet. If there is a holiday that would take longer but those aren't work days. (please re-read the post)When I said NEVER I was referring to NEVER has any part been allowed to sit here with no work done to it for three months, and THAT never will happen. There are two sides two every story no doubt. And every shop runs into parts delivery issues. But I will not sit there and let someone claim something, and skew it so as to be a victem of something, when it wasn't the case. He was in no rush for the parts then three days later starts making threats over the phone and in person. Three days, not three months. He can claim what he wants, he can bash and follow me around all he wants, I will continue to do what I always have. Treat people the way I want to be treated and be is upfront and forward as possible. Those actions will speak for themselves and have, and those actions are the only ones I'm responsible for.

He and I are the only two that know the truth of this situation and of course he is going to portray his business in the best light.

I will go as far as saying that if you deal with them you are most likely to be happy, but I was not, and I will not ever reccomend them.

As for the nature of the thread: I dont think anyone here is going to argue about Steve Kan VS. A-Spec on who is the better more experienced tuner. So I stand by my origional statement get your car to St Louis and have Steve tune it or wait till the next time he is nearby and then have him tune it.

In running my restaurant I came across difficult customers and I pissed customers off and knew I should have handled things differently and regreted the way things turned out. This is one of those situations.
