I received a notice this morning that a shipping label was created, but apparently it didn't ship yet. It was ordered 4 months ago, but not critical at all. I really like Chip and would love to get some work done through him, but having only made some parts purchases so far.
As mentioned above though, that’s what he told me when I inquired about getting a substantial amount of service work done. Yet he didn’t take it on and never even responded when I asked multiple times about a waiting list. So he deserves some credit for not just adding on to the pile heedlessly, when he easily could have done that. Based on that it’ doesn’t appear to be a Peter for Paul scenario.
He did mention about having to be away out of the shop for a while and had only just gotten back. I didn’t ask and he didn’t offer any explanation what the reason for that is. He has been slow getting back to me at times, but generally does eventually. That’s about all I can offer further on my own experience of the last year or so.
Hope it all works out to your satisfaction soon.

About 2 months ago I ordered a large master from him. After 2 weeks it hasn’t shipped, I asked for a refund he said yes. Got the refund a week later along with an apology saying he was having trouble sourcing certain parts

I'm glad I ran across this thread. I gave him an engine to rebuild last April. Nothing fancy just a stock rebuild. Provided him 2 spare housings too, just in case. First time meeting him, took a tour of his shop and checked out his work. Looked legit to me. He told me it would be 2 to 3 months and oh by the way, needed $2,800 in advance before he would start. I thought it was a little strange he didn't mention anything about it when I called and arranged my 8 hour drive out to drop off the engine. I sent the money as soon as I got home and didn't bug him until July. He told me he had been gone for 6 weeks on a family emergency.
After another few weeks, he told me he couldn't locate an appropriate flywheel for balancing, so I mailed him one. He acknowledged getting it and thats the last I've heard. That was Sept 25th. I've tried calling, texting and emailing for an update, but so far nothing but silence from his end. I must say, I'm less than impressed at this point.

Man I have entire brand new motor I sent this guy back 2021 paid for extra work to handle high HP. Close to 20k invested. STILL haven't heard a word from this guy. Just takes your money and holds your parts hostage.

also sent him a new stock 13brew in may of last year for a rebuild. spoke to him last November and sounded pretty optimistic about being done before end of the year. since then.. ive been getting completely ignored.. if you think $2500 is bad i had to fork over 5k ahead of the build. please post on here if you get any updates.

I have a car in the shop from Florida right now that the owner sent Chip his engine and $10K over 2 years ago, completely ghosted him. I had to source him another core to build.

Apparently he's still at his shop with a back brace on. Because he needed "back surgery". And told the police to tell me: "come pick up my engine if i didnt want to wait for the work" so thats what im going to do. Id suggest everyone else who has a **** ton of money invested in this guy to do the same. Looks like hes getting ready to try and dip. my lawyer has filed criminal and civil charges.

Nitriding is a heat treating process. Chip farms that out. Being in the Detroit area, there are many smaller business / shops that have provided a variety of related services to the large automakers. Not sure where he sent them and no doubt it helped to be able to send them several irons at once to be run in batches. When I was there last year, he had them all over the place in pallet boxes. I think he said someone from the UK sent them over. The point is, even if Chips is no more, the service could still be available.

I was just talking to him 2 weeks ago. Trying to see if the closed post is true.
Edit: the company is not closed, or out of business, or about to skip out. It’s just as my first post in this thread stated; he’s not generally accepting new service business until the backlog is caught up, which is actively in progress. I bought and received parts in a timely manner.
I don’t want to dismiss any distress being experienced by the people with parts and payments invested and waiting. It’s not the situation anyone wants to experience. At the same time it doesn’t help anyone to be making inaccurate statements or false accusations either.
I hope it works out for everyone soon.

You don't get a free pass if you're busy, backlogged, waiting on X Y or Z. You owe a responsibility to people who paid you. It takes literally 30 seconds to call or email a customer and provide an update, even if it's as simple as "I'm really sorry, we are super swamped but here's where you land in our queue". If you cannot muster 30 seconds to update someone who's likely paid you hundred to thousands of dollars and is waiting, you're a complete lazy piece of ****. If you can't, hire a secretary that will. You have all that cash you swiped from people that you haven't delivered on anyways to pay for help.
There is ZERO excuse to ignore customers. Zero. You owe them because they paid you. I don't understand how this has become the standard, and how so many people just write this off as acceptable. If this was anything more than 20 years ago people would be hunting this man down for answers.

And that's after sending them out to be lapped.

I agree that paying customers deserve answers and am in no way making excuses for the situation. He could have taken my money & parts too, but instead declined and told me about the backlog. That’s all I was intending to convey.
Otherwise my only dealings there have been parts purchases and not any service work. Which I haven’t really had any issues with any of that. Got nothing else to add other than as someone who lost money more than once, I wish and hope the best for the people waiting.
Last one was from buying a transmission with a broken gearset on here and the gearset manufacturer in Australia took my $2500 USD for the replacement parts, then covid hit and I can’t get anything but lip service from him. Which he lied so many times there’s not any reason trying to talk to him any more. So I was out that plus the transmission cost.

Thought I would respond
Hey guys, thought I would give my input on your situation with Chip even though it won’t help. I am a machine shop owner across the street from him and thought it was strange that I hadn’t seen his truck in a couple months. Only reason I found this forum is because I was seeing if he was still in business. I am actually surprised that the police got ahold of him as he is never there now. He was actually living in the office of the shop and only left twice a day for years for what I’m assuming was breakfast and dinner. He always came across as strange to me when he needed work done. I haven’t seen activity there for a while now

Let's hope he has proper health insurance to cover a back injury and the impact that has on his business. A back brace / surgery and no ability to work can be devastating. While it doesn't excuse his treatment of customers, I do hope he is OK.
America, where a back injury can cause you to go bankrupt and lose everything, and then you can't even escape the medical debt by declaring bankruptcy. Fingers crossed there's an actual recovery in his future.
