New build MS2 Extra 2.1.0

I am trying to setup my MS2 build. I have a 3.0 PCB and Beta 2.1.0 firmware downloaded from the link at the top of this forum. I am setting it up for an S5 N/A. Eventually it will control the aux ports and the fan, maybe more. But for now I am working my way into this slowly, working only on the bench using the JimStim. I have worked through a few issues so far on my own. Most of these were learning curves on my part.

I have run into a snag I have not been able to work through. I am trying to setup the fuel as staged injection similar to the original operation of the RX7. If I turn off the staged injection, the INJ1 and INJ2 LEDs on the JimStim flash simultaneously. When I try to setup the staged injection, I seem to get only the INJ1 LED flashing up to 3600 RPM (my primary stage threshold). After that point INJ1 LED goes out and INJ2 never comes on. This is paralleld by the pulse width gauge in Megatune going to zero at that point. I can change the threshold and get the operation to follow, So I know it is not some other setting interfering.

I'm thinking that the proper operation should be that the INJ2 light should come on at that point and both LEDS should work in harmony and the PW gauge should drop to ~50% of the pre-threshold reading. No?

Any help will be appreciated.

yea, you're correct in what you are expecting to happen. Why that is not the case, I dont know, but if everything is working fine in non-sequential injection, its most likely not a hardware problem. Re-load the firmware onto the MS2 and give it another go.

I've found that sometimes after re-loading the firmware, that I need to go and create a whole new *.msq file since the old one seems like it can corrupt the new re-flash.

Funny thing, This morning I turned everything on and it is working as I expected it to. At the threshold level, PW1 drops fromn ~29ms to around 17ms. and the PW2 coms on at that point. I didn't reload anything. Just turned everything on. Maybe rebooting my laptop this AM helped?

HRMPH! go figure.

Topless, Thanks for the confirmation of operation expectations. If this happens again..... when you say reload the firmware, do you mean burn to ECU from megatune? or download the firmware from the DOS window (req'd for 2.1.0)?

I will have more questions as I work thru the issues. I would expect it to be too much to find a functioning base msq file for 2.1.0 and an S5 with aux port control and fan control?

did you reboot the ms after burning the settings? you have to on a lot of the injection settings like that. stuff that you need to reboot the ms after should be highlighted in red on the menu.

eage8 - that may be the trick. I saw the highlighted red messages but sometimes, until it hits you in the head real hard, it doesn't really mean much. Thanks.

Next question: Is there a way to see the action of the generic port settings on the Megatune screen? I have set up the JS0 (IAC1) as my aux port control and JS2 (IAC2) as my fan control. I have enabled them in the port configurator with a power on value of "0" and a trigger value of "1". I have not yet installed the driver circuitry in the proto area or connected them to the 37pin sub-D connector. It would be nice to see them "actuate" before I commit.

If you're using the IAC pins, wire your relays to js1 and js3 (off the top of my head). You don't need to build any extra circuits as the stepper driver circuit that's already on the ms2 daughtercard can directly drive any relays.

Just make sure you wire the relays so that they have 12v going to them, and then have the MS ground the switch on the other side.

You can test that they're working by using a multi-tester on js1 or js3. When the output you want is on, you'll have near 0ohms resistance between the js1 or js3 pin and ground.

Thanks Ken, I hadn't thought of the IAC outputs as already being buffered through the stepper driver. I see that the drivers are good for ~500mA so that should work out fine. The simple implementation is, as you say, just to run jumper wires from the JS(x) to the 37pin connector. I plan on using SPR1 and SPR2. No need to build the transistor ckts at all. I guess I lucked out in the selection of my ports.

JS1 and JS3 are just the complements to JS0 and JS2, no? Either pair should work and if the logic operation is backwards, they can be swapped in the port setup parameters.

I think I'm getting the hang of the circuits and the megatune software. Now if I can only understand the parameters I've programmed in as it relates to tuning......

Once I get this implemented, probably tomorrow, and verify its operation with the Jimstim, the whole MS gets packed up and put on the shelf until I get to the point on the car to do something with it.

I couldn't wait to tomorrow to try it. I ran 2 wires; JS0 to SPR1; and JS2 to SPR2. I reversed the parameters in the port setup. "Power on" set to 1; "triggered value" set to 0. Hooked it all up to the Jimstim. Ran a couple of jumpers to some LEDS and Violla! It works like a charm. Now I need to remember the coils on the relays I choose have to be > 30 ohms. Thanks again!
