MS Newbie questions I didn't see addressed in the FAQ's

This might be a question for the rotary specific MegaSquirt gurus...

I'm seriously thinking about going to the MS-II v3 to run my stock '89T2, which needs to pass the Maryland emissions test every 2 years.

I've read the various FAQ's and understand that the MS-II v3 board with the latest firmware code can be configured to control fuel & spark (i.e., leading & trailing) just like my stock ECU. What I'm not finding out there is any references to passing emissions tests.

For reference, my '89T2 still has the stock main cat, and easily passes the MD test with the stock ECU, and all emissions related components functioning.

Q1: The stock ECU also controls several emissions related solenoid valves, 2 of which are part of the air control valve (ACV). Those 2 valves are the switching solenoid valve and the port air solenoid valve, which direct air pump air to either the main cat or intake ports, respectively. Can the MS be configured to control these same solenoid valves, just like stock?

Q2: The S5 T2 has a solenoid valve to control boost, also controled by the stock ECU - Can the MS control this as well?

Q3: Not really a question, since I think I already know the answer to this one, but has anyone found a way to control the stock S5 electronic metering oil pump with the MS? No biggie for me, since I'm OK with switching to pre-mix.

Cheers,
Pete

First of all, the MS is not CARB certified so that in and of itself makes it an illegal mod for street applications and thus will be an automatic failure of emissions testing (IF found by your inspector)

Second, There is a proto area in the circuit board of the MS to build different circuits to control diff functions. As far as the sorftware goes, I dont know if anything is in there to control the Emissions items. I highly doubt it.

Third, the MS does not control the OMP on an S5, so going premix is required.

Now, With some research and really good tuning, You can get the MS to pass a sniffer test. Again, this will require some heavy and accurate tuning to ensure that the tailpipe emissions are within the legal limit for your state.

MD doesn't do much of a visual inspection, as far as I can tell. Been through it twice so far, and in both cases they didn't even open the hood. Just a sniffer test on a roller dyno. They do inspect under the car for a catalytic converter though. As for CARB certification being a legal requirement, I don't think that's relevant in the other 49 states. I'm no lawyer, but CARB = California Air Resources Board, so why would this governing/regulatory body have jurisdiction over any other state?

I know the MS-II docs don't mention any rotary specific outputs for emissions controls, but given the fact that it can be user configured to handle some number of binary on/off devices like e-fans, H2O injection, etc., setting one up to operate a solenoid valve for an emissions device should be do-able.

Understood. I guess I should rephrase my question: Is anyone running a S5 T2 on the MS-II v3, controlling fuel & spark (leading & trailing, just like stock) in the state of MD, and if so has it passed the MD emissions test? If you passed, please share details on the HW/SW configuration that made it happen.

What kind of dyno do you not hook a tach speed too?

Beats me, but I can assure you that whatever equipment they use for emissions testing at the Cecil Co. MD location (Rt 40), no wires were connected to anything under the hood. My guess is for that purpose, they just measure your "road speed" from the rollers while they sniff your exhaust.

My question is how long do they test a car? Think about this for a sec, in 2009 your car will be 20 years old. I came from P.A and they consider anything 20 years or older exempt from emissions testing. I'm not sure about Maryland but I would check into it. You may not have to worry about any of that stuff.
