NY x-DSMer new to rx7's from NY

Hey all, I am a former DSMer from Buffalo, NY. I had a 92 Talon TSi AWD heavily modded, until I lost interest in fixing it. I sold that last year and bought a KIA for the wife to drive around as a DD, and have felt soulless since the day I saw it drive away.

A buddy of mine mentioned, when he can afford it, that he wants an rx7 with an ls1 swap. So that got me thinking and is what drew me to this forum and now I can get enough of these things. I'm not sure how the rotary purists take this remark so I'll tread as light as I can, but I am looking for a rx7 that is either already swapped or has the potential to be (ie. roller, blown engine, etc.).

Anyhow, thanks for the space. I'm off to make one more post so I can PM some folks!

Well, I'm going to assume you mean a FD LS1 swap, so as long as it's one of those cars, it doesn't bother me that much...

Welcome aboard! Heck of a way to get started!

RX7's with blown motors, believe it or not aren't all that hard to find. Look into the rotary some before dismissing it. It's not for everyone and that's up to you but they are great engines and like anything else you just have to do things right. If you do a poor job modifying any car and drive with a shitty tune while beating on it, it'll break. If you put in the work to learn about the differences as well as the equally important similarities, you can build one hell of a machine. My brother and I have done all the modifications with the exception of the actual rebuild and porting of my engine. We knew nothing about these cars before hand but we took our time and just read about different things. We're just starting off and my FD is 374whp at 15psi with a GT35R. It's not even at it's full potential yet. We're just taking it slow and staying within our limits with the knowledge we have now. As we learn more the better this thing will get. You have to do what suits you, I'm just saying look at your options. Being that you have a great source of information to the world of rotary, see what it's all about , has to offer and is capable of doing when done right. For all I know this was a waste of time, you may already know about them but if not I hope it gives you something to think about. Good luck and post up about whatever you decide to do.

Oh, I blew up a 95 TSI AWD with a 6 bolt and a built 2nd gen head before I decided to get this car. So at least your coming from a venue that is already hated on just cause you have to know what your doing if you want it to come out right. Not every car can be as abusable as a Honda, lol!

LOL, that is so very true and mainly the reason I wanted to move into something more reliable.

I am intrigued by the rotary, but honestly just cannot jump into another motor that wasn't designed to make as much power as we would want them to, and constantly worry about when it's going to pop. Since the V8's make about 400+ hp in their sleep, I'm perfectly happy with that

And yes mar3, FD LS1 swap.... I've been searching only those for the last 3 days I forgot about people swapping 2nd gens.

Well once you get up and running if you end up around the capital region with it for some reason I'd love to check it out. I don't see many RX7's around here and have never seen one with a v8 in general. I've thought about getting a 1st gen and trying to get my brother to use it for his old aluminum 215 turbo jetfire engine from the 60's. Make it a 302 like he wants and put a nice turbo on it. I figure it'd be unique and fun as hell to drive. My car actually came from Buffalo, the guy sold it through some other guy Enzo in Rochester that was a real big piece of **** and ripped me off. The guy actually lied to me over the phone while I was in Iraq. At least the car itself is in great shape and now runs again.

I will let you know for sure. I am fighting with the wife over getting another car. I'd like to purchase a pre swapped FD but the wife isn't too happy about me spending the money since we're expecting our first child in November, and to be honest I am not sure either. Kind of bad timing, on my part, to get the itch for another car. I guess it will come down to price and how much I love the car.

What do you think is a fair price for a pre swapped LSx, a roller, and a running rotary rx7?

Welcome aboard!
Hope you do get an FD even though it is swapped. And no...it's not your bad timing...it's the baby's. Sell it and you'll have more than enough money for your needs . Just playing man. Anywho, you can get one fully swapped for about 20-25k I believe. There's a few I saw here in the forums and in eBay around that price.

Oh hey and Mat! Just realized you went single! GJ I have yet to go there...sigh....damn this tough economy......

LOL, funniest post I've read in a long time!!! And something I haven't thought of, I'll have to ask the wife how much she thinks we can get for her.

I've found a couple FD's that I am drooling over. I show her and she seems less than interested. Maybe I'll have to go and buy her some flowers and a massage or something. You'd think the snow tires I just bought for the Kia would have done the trick, but it didn't.

Snows are a necessity where you are, lol. My fiance gets mad when I pretend she cars and talk to her about my car. Well a swapped FD is gonna pretty much be big bucks up front. If you can afford it you might actually be best off buying a running FD since you can find them for cheap if you shop around. If you find a good enough deal you could make a decent amount of money parting out what you don't need. If you don't have the time to do this then your best bet is the roller. You can find a roller anywhere from $5k-$8k depending on condition and desperation of the seller.

Yeah I didn't plan on going single but the BNR stock rebuilt twins blew a seal at ~1.3k miles. I didn't feel like messing with it. These damn cars are so damn loud. I have straight 3" and the Apexi N1 and can't take it or the problems with cops so I just bought a RB single tip CB and Borla XR-1 MP.

Yea tell me about it...I just installed my DP a month ago and it sounds like a bike! I have yet to put in an after market exhaust like a Greddy Ti, heard that Apexi N1's are pretty irritating loud, glad you confirmed it.
The 35r should last you while you are at school though how does it feel compared to twins? Maybe next time I go up there I can pay you a visit

As much as people think thier ls1 swapped cars are worth......you would be money ahead to buy a car and swap it yourself as long as you can do it yourself. I think the cheapest I have seen on on here was 19500. You figure you can buy a rolling FD for 5k, ls1 with tranny and harness for 3.5k-4, the misc. parts to adapt 2k. Worste case senario is you have a running swapped FD for 11k. Not sure where these poeple think that just because it has an ls1 that its worth 35k lol. Or you could buy a car with some great mods that would smoke an ls swapped car for much less money.....your call. As far as the haters go with shunning you because you arent rotary loyal......who cares. Its your money brother.

I agree about the price of the swapped rx7's. I am having a very hard time justifying the money for one that is already done. I have the knowledge to do most of the work myself, I get a little lost with wiring though. The only problem I have seen with the $5K rollers is that they are beat to hell and most of the swapped cars are pretty mint (at least in the price range we're talking about). I also can't believe the price of some of the stock and even modded FD's going for $17K.... I guess thats just the DSM bitterness in me. My low 11 second 1G sold for a whopping $6,500.

I don't blame you, the rx7 is so sexy.
