Possible future rx7 owner here

Hey guys, I've always had a love for rx7s and I actually rememember coming to this forum years and years ago and looking at all the cars when I was maybe...13? By the time I was 14 I knew more about rotary engines than anyone in my family.

Well i'm 17 now, about to head off to college, and far from an rx7, I drive a '97 Ford Escort. This car is reliable beyond belief with 241k on the engine. But I don't love it, its just an alright car.

I occasionally browse craigslist and the other day I saw an '82 rx7 for 900 bucks, says it runs and the body looks mint. I'm tempted to buy. I'm only worried about the reliability of a 28 year old car, gas mileage, and about insurance. I'll only have plpd on it, like my escort, but isn't it a sport car? I pay about 100 a month right now on my escort, anything over is just not going to cut it. I've always wanted an rx7, but I never looked too much into the 1st gen. Is it going to be overly expensive to repair? I bet spare parts for these aren't as common as an escort in the junkyard.

i say go for it usually with most insurance companies, like mine, they gave me a discount for insuring multiple cars, plus if you put bare minimum coverage it should be really cheap. there great cars as for parts and reliability.... ehh

i have a 87 GXL and a 85 se i have spent alot of time on them but now that they are up to date it was well worth it that only the expirience of owning one can explain the pleasure and excitement you get from the sound, smell and feeling of the car.
if you have the time the money and the paitience GET ONE!!

1984 GSL was my first car in high school and I do not regret it! While they can be more expensive to own/maintain and insure than the average beater... you end up getting a great driving experience and a feeling of excitement whenever you turn the key that you just don't get with your average car.

Fun to drive, decent on gas, perfect first car if you do not have to worry about harsh winters.

Petrol is going to hurt you. As an example there are twisty country roads I like to drive and I used to run an Audi 80E Sport over them and return with a nearly 3/4 of a tank from full. When I first got my RX I filled up and went out for a drive. Got up next morning and car wouldn't start, I thought I'd bought a lemon until I noticed that the full guage wasn.t registering or so I thought. If you enjoy your driving you can expect these cars to enjoy emptying your wallet!

you will love it. and you can get parts here for very cheap.

and gas mileage depends on na or turbo and how you drive. i get 28 on the highway and 26 in town, but i dont drive fast at all.
