NY New rx-7 owner (almost)

Hi There,

I just bought a 1993 RX-7 project car which I am picking up in a few days which I hope does not turn into a HUGE project. One think I am stumped on is that the seller told me it is a R1 but I do not know how to tell if it actually is. The vin # of the car is JM1FD3317P0208388 is there anyway to tell from that if it is a R1 or only from features on the car?

Any help would be greatly appreciated in my first stages of being a RX-7 owner.

I believe the only real way to tell is go to your local Mazda dealership, give them you Vin and they will give you print out of all the options your car came with.

Does your car have the lip, dual oil coolers, suede seats, and the other characteristics of an R1?

Well,

Here is the full story as It took me a little bit to figure it out. I purchase what I think is a Clean title and clean history 1993 RX7 R1. I knew it had a blown motor and a extra blown motor and parts. After I pay for the vehicle and take the parts and title home and schedule to pick up the car later this week. I take a look at my title and see that my car weighs more than my friends touring edition.

So I run a carfax and see that the car has salvage history and is not a R1. Long story short I call the guy back and tell him to give me a portion of my money back or take the car back and give me my money. So I have my money and no RX7 so my (almost) RX7 turned into NO RX7.

I don't know if this is right, but I read on here somewhere that the ONLY way you can tell what model your car is, is by going to a Mazda dealership. Give them the vin #, and they will give you a print out of all the options the car came from the factory with. From this you will able to tell what model your car is. I don't think carfax has records of what model a car is. Maybe one of the other, more knowledgeable guys can chime in and verify this?

I have a 1994 touring, and when I got the carfax for my car it said nothing about it being a touring model.

Did they weigh the car before it was titled? In my state they don't.

How much did you pay for the car?

Well I did not conclude from the fact that the weight was different that is was not a R1. The car did not have the dual oil coolers or front lip or suede seats. it had cloth seats. The kid said that the suspension is after market and I believe that the R1 should have came with a upgraded suspension right?

I spend the whole day running vin#s and decoders on my and my friends touring to compare things. I went to the dealer as you suggested and he told me that they can only run car records from 1997 and up and was not able to help me out. But Im a web designer and searched the web a little bit and low and behold I found where he bought the car from ( http://www.dragtimes.com/classifieds...D=250304198817 )

I was told it was a 1993 R1 with clean history and record. The car had salvage history and to my knowledge was not a R1. I paid $7700
here is the posting http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=250511628

and the vin# on this page is wrong to. I ran it and saw a clean history and then the car had a different vin#

wow i didn't realize how much bigger the FD looks next to the eclipse. anyway the car has a 35k mile Jspec swap and it runs smooth i will test the compression to see what we are working with. also the rear tires a 265 wide as hell but it drives nice. nice car, needs little maintenance.
