Just Bought my First RX-7 CYM FD3S R1
#77
From a fellow CYM owner, official welcome to the CYM Owner's Club. Congratulations on picking up 1 of 350 CYM's sold in the US in 1993. Including you, the list is not up to 41 CYM owner's. 42 if we count the one for sale on that auction place.
Consider keeping all of the stock parts you plan on removing in case you ever want to put it back to stock.

thanks Richard. I am keeping ALL stock parts I remove and trying not to mod to much. Just reliability and a little more power.
Just blocked off my EGR last night. Wow, really? They weren't kidding when they said it's a pin hole! It doesn't' look like this is the first time it had failed either. Someone was definitely in there before and broke the clip to the electrical connector on the EGR sensor. I put the block off plate from Banzai on there and left the gasket on.
Discovered one of my upper control arms was trashed from pressing out the pillow ball. I don't know how it got gouged so bad unless it was from the factory. Luckily, this site is AWESOME and after posting a WTB I received 5 different offers. I may be getting a set with all new Bushings!
I am on the fence about the down pipe now. I'm so close to getting it out with the Y-Pipe off, but do I just wait and replace it this winter when I have the motor rebuilt? The car has run 101k miles with it and is now in a cooler climate. I don't intend to work it too hard and even though I picked up a PowerFC, I don't intend to tune for more power just yet. I'm getting the I just want to drive it motivation.

OK, got the downpipe off. Only two of the 4 studs came off. I'm going to have to go buy two smaller nuts and back the studs off. Quick test fit with two studs on and it looks like the RX7store pipe is going to fit fine. I'll be 100% for sure probably Sunday afternoon when I can get back to it.
So, in the spirit of getting it back on the road ASAP, I have decided to do the following. I'm going to have a bung welded on the back by the cat flange for my Wideband and then I will wrap it. It's a really cheap and get's me on the road sooner. I'll unwrap it this winter and if it is still looking good, I'll send it for powder coating.
Now on to my next issue. I have a used PowerFC that the owner tells me is reset back to the factory defaults. Am I crazy to plug that beast in when I'm all done or do I wait and let a tuner (tbd) install it and tune it? This gives me time to also find a datalogit. I don't want to take it to get it dyno tuned now. The only reason I want to put the PowerFC on is to get rid of the CEL for the EGR, get rid of the warm up and control boost with the downpipe (I think ...).

I have never been a supporter of spending so much money on wheels. That is, until I saw the Advan RG-Ds on an FD. I think I want a black set of those in a few years.

OK, that DP was a royal pain. So, fitment wise the lower front bolt has trouble seating because of the welds on the pipe. One of my cat bolts wouldn't line up because it's angled and didn't fit. I dropped the cat but was unsuccessful at removing the stud. That thing is heavy!
So, to see if she would fire up I did put the midpipe on. I guess next week will be installing the PowerFC so I don't blow her up too soon. I have to say though, the sound is pretty good with DP, MidPipe and Racing Beat Exhaust.
I'm not happy where the Wideband comes out, it's literally a 1/16" away from the transmission. I'm thinking to get another bung and put it on the midpipe I want to paint and wrap the midpipe anyway. That stuff stinks while it's baking in BTW. I'm not sure yet how to route the wiring back into the cabin so ideas are welcome.
Tomorrow I will do the brakes and get it ready for an alignment. I'll stay out of boost till I get the PowerFC installed and working properly to be safe.

OK, time for some updates. I would have done then sooner, but I was having too much fun. Replacing all the pillow ***** and installing the TCS horizontal and Toe Adjusters eliminated all my clunking in the rear. WOOHOO. I also scored a FSM and Eibach springs and I have to say, I love these springs. The ride height is perfect and it's nice and stiff, but not riding on bump stops like my Miata.
I also ended up doing both the RX7 Downpipe AND Midpipe as my cat just wouldn't line up. I do have an Apexi PowerFC to install, but I took her out and gave her a few pulls to watch my boost. Leaving the intact stock seems to keep her from over boosting as she is looking nice. BUT, WOW, does my butt dyno feel like there are 100 more horses under the hood. I was also nervous I would have an obnoxious overly loud Ricer Exhaust note. But, the DP/Midpipe combined with the Racing Beat Dual tip is perfect. The exhaust is throating when you get on it, but no drone on the highway and my neighbors won't call the cops on me.
The paint/heat wrap really stinks and that stuff is still baking in. But, the car has been an absolute joy to drive. I'm not used to getting so much attention when I cruise around in a car. If I was younger it may be fun, but it's a little embarrassing now. Handling in these cars is pretty crazy. The wheel response is immediate and the thing can turn on a dime. I'm not 100% happy with my RS3s right now as the rears feel a little twitchy and slippery, but maybe they need to have a heat cycle or two to break in.
Only thing left is to burn enough gas down to be able to do the fuel filter and then do my plugs, oil and brakes. I am really loving this car though.
Here is a quick snap after I got it back from being aligned:
