yeah, I actually have a parts car that was partially sanded and primed, and the guy left it outside for a couple of months. When he pulled all the snow off it, it was rusted solid.
waste of a nice S4, in that respect.
The flat black or matte black has it's place. My FB will be that color. Why? to hide all the imperfections that it isnt' worth fixing in a car I bought for $150.

How does it rust under the primer? Doesn't make sense to me, especially because my friend had a primer nova for like 2 or 3 years that sat outside in WA weather (ie rain) and it never rusted.

I have a flat black truck in the old school hot rod style. However, It is not primer it is an actual satin black enamel. I like the satin black look if it is done as a professional paint job.
If bare metal is primered over and left out in the elements it will rust if the primer is a surface building lacquer primer (most are). These primers will actually absorb water and cause problems if you try to paint over them in the future. They are made for surface building and filling small imperfections not sealing the surface. If you use a two part epoxy primer it will last. Now if you are priming over a good paint job then of course you dont need to worry about it rusting through.
Dupont makes a line of paint called Hot Hues which offers a satin black and even a Matte finish clear coat.
I have attached a couple pics of my truck that is satin black with gloss black flames.

some primer, the common cheaper stuff is not waterproof so alot of shops use it, because it works just as well, but it's not waterproof, but they'll be painting the car so it doesn't matter.
The non waterproof stuff is waterproof for about 48 hours.
