VIS Polyfiber 99 Jspec Replica
#51
This just in, I don't think VIS got my last email because I haven't recieved anything from them and their usual response time is a day or two. I'm going to send them another copy right after I post this. Sorry about the delay folks.

does the '95 undertray fit to the '99 bumper? i remember reading about it in another thread and i think that they're different.

ok so with a bit of work i won't need to buy new one....or maybe i can sell the old....
damn i'm lazy
dclin, please update me or all of us when you've done your modification to the old rebar to make the new bumper fit. I think I've seen others that just chopped off the ends and left the middle. Was this your plan?

BTW, does anyone know if this poly-fiberglass stuff is repairable? because urethane, once broken, can only be covered up, unlike fiberglass, which can be repaired.

Fitment is great....(1st hand experience here w/ VIS polyfiber parts). Also, the polyfiber is MUCH lighter than urethane. In fact, it's just as light as fiberglass peices. If you've ever picked up a of urethane bumper...it's heavy as hell. And, it's plasticy (i know that's not a word lol). In serious heat, urethane tends to sag and melt/deform. Polyfiber won't.
oh and dclin is absolutely right... a diff rebar (or modifying the stock one) is absolutely necessary for the combo lights to fit. And i know on the c-west bumper, for the bumper to actually touch the fenders, a lot of work is needed too. Due to the way the nose slants down, the rebar becomes a barrier, causing a considerable gap between the bumper and the fender....so not only would you have to modify the rebar to fit the lights, but you'd need to somehow make it thinner. Of course, there's the option of just getting rid of the rebar altogether...
like someone else said, VIS polyfiber bumpers do tend to sell for around $200 - $300, so you're getting an incredible deal either way.
ChrisChung125...if you need help getting ahold of VIS, lemme know. Or call them up, 626-573-8383 (California time), and try to speak to Grant. Tell him Ramy sent you from the RX7 crowd. He'll jump right on it ;-)

Why not call Chris (the owner)??? Seems like the more direct approach. I am sure Chris is going to have to give the "yes" on it anyways since they are making a brand new mold.

Dude, what the **** would anyone want with the liscense plate holder on an aftermarket bumper? its absolutely the worst looking thing i've ever seen. I will laugh (and cry) my *** off if somebody finally builds a flexible '99 replica with the plate holder STILL ON. They already make that; its called the OEM part.
Make the thing without it, and people who need to mount a plate (they require it here in VA, but i've never had one in 10 years of RX7 ownership) they can either buy the OEM or use a bracket.

Pettit's is unflexible Fiberglass. End of story
Buy an OEM then. Ever hear of the term "reinventing the wheel"? You're going to custom build a part thats just like whats already available? Hmm.
Or more to the point: do a search for threads asking "where can I get a 99 front end with no plate holder or remove the OEM?" then do a search for posts asking "is there any way i can get the plate holder grafted back on to a pettit 99 replica?"

No **** sherlock we can buy an OEM Mazda piece. Thats not the point of this.
The point of this is the OEM is over 500 bucks unless you get the Mazdacomp sponsorship.
A VIS replica would be under 300 bucks and it would have the rigidity of fiberglass and the strength of polyurethane.

Keep your friggin' pants on! We barely have any details about what VIS is going to do anway. It remains to be seen whether VIS will go with one (bumper skins w/front plate holders) or the other (bumper skins w/o plate holders).

Can any interested parties just send a one or 2 word email as to whether or not you're interested. This is just for counting purposes so I can gauge what numbers would "theoretically" be about in the event that VIS wants a head count. The addy is chris_chung125@yahoo.com Thanks.

Even a '99 replica wing is $700 + shipping that is insane!!! I don't care if its fully carbon fiber. Once you pay for shipping and paint your near a grand already. Is there some high tech mechanism in the wing that adjusts automatically for optimum downforce you can buy full replica bodykits for $1000 why does the wing cost so much!?!?

I called VIS the other day and there was some information exchanged and the impression that they're going to look into it and get back to me. What's note worthy is that they said that they'd make one with a license plate holder if there are 15 people interested in it, and make one without one if there were 15 people interested in that. That means we need at least 30 people divided down the middle if we want both models. What I can tell you for sure is that it seems to be a consensus answer amongst those that I've spoken to at VIS that it will be in the 250-350 range. If the response continues to be as strong as it is and more people email me who are interested, we can send some solid numbers over to VIS and get this off the ground. As of this moment there are 6 emails sitting in my mail box. Lets get those numbers up. Next on the agenda when I speak to them next will be what we would need to do (i.e. prepay or an email list of interested members or something like that) to get them to make it. I'm gonna stop typing now.

Hey Chris...not to change the subject, but if possible, when you order yours, can you give me a head's up...cuz I'm in Northern VA, and I'm waitin on a bumper to come in to VIS...and I figured we can both save and have both our bumpers shipped together, and split the shipping costs... cuz shipping from VIS is a BITCH. It's clear cross country, and runs around $150 - $180 if I recall correctly...

PS...on that note, id suggest that when this buy goes through, everyone in on it tries to buddy up w/ a couple of people in their area, so basically you can cut the shipments from 30 individual ones to perhaps 3 or 4 major shipments, split the costs, and after that either drive up and meet one another, or even ship 'em via greyhound/GPX for like $40. Just my $0.02
