Upgrading first-gen front speakers...

Okay, the CD player is working great, except when I turn the bass and the volume up, my front speakers start distorting to all hell.. no surprise there, 4" full range speakers can't handle much.. So, I'm thinking of going to Inifinity References in 5 1/4". I know some of you guys have done this, albeit maybe not with the exact same speaker. Anyone have any pictures or walk-throughs of how they've done this before? Thanks,

A couple problems here. #1- You need a shallow 5 1/4" speaker in order for it to work. #2- The driver side has a big bundle of wire right there, you may not be able to get it in there. If you get it working, let me know, I would be interested in putting something like that in my first gen.

I don't know much about RX-7's thats why I'm here. But I do know a little about car audio. It's probably out of the question. But by modifying your door panels,(Building them out) you can increase the clearence between the speakers driver, and power window motor and wires that usually get in the way. This will allow you to run a nice big set of components.

Second. Alot of the time, speakers distort because the deck dosn't put out enough power to snap the cone back and forth in time to keep up, hence, the speaker misses alot of sounds. It's like trying to sprint down a steep hill. Your feet just cant keep up. If that's your problem intalling a good clean amp can smoothen and crispen up your sound nicely.

Doing both of these will give you very nice sound. BUT...
The reason I said modifying you door panels may be out of the question, is because it's probably hard to find a second set of door panels for a 3rd gen RX-7. You will have to damage them to modify them.(Drilling, and screws.) So, many people prefer to take the originals off and find a second set to modify.

The only other problem is that it will take away a little leg space.(I don't know how much space is in a RX-7) How much will be detirmined by the size of the speaker drivers, and the amount of usable space is in the door.

You may want to take your speakers out, and take them to a friend that has a nice amp. Ask him/her if you can hook them up to see how they handle hi volumes with some good power behind them.

Hope this helps,
Lloyd.
