Sub enclosure in spare tire well on 2nd Gen..

Anybody done this? I'd like to put a single JL Audio 10" back there to keep it pretty much hidden, as I'm trying to make a fairly stealth setup that sounds decent. Doesn't have to be competition quality... just sound decent for everyday driving.

What's the best way to go about it? Fiberglass? Does somebody make these prefabbed? .......

F'Glass is the only way to go to get decent airspace.

I wouldn't use the 10w3, as the depth might be iffy, but I would try the 10W6 or 10W1.

JL makes a couple of spare tire replacement boxes for other cars, you might try to see if any of those would fit, for a pre-made enclosure.

Well, from what I can tell, then 10W3 only needs just over 6.5" of depth to mount it... haven't measured the space just yet, but It looks close. I thought that the dimensions for all of JL's 10" were pretty much identical... could I be wrong on this assumption? Reson I like that model is that it only nees something like 0.64 cuft of air behind it in a sealed enclosure to perform well. I would think I could get at least that out of that location.

Why dont' you take out the cubby holes and put the enclosure in there? It'll be much easier to work with. That's what I did and it turned out pretty good. I'll post pics if you want me to although you wont' be able to see much because it's covered upr ight now.

Peace,
AJ ^_^

Well IMO the JLs are the best woofers available right now, but its been 6 months since I have seen a 10W3, but as I recall the 10W3 was by far the deepest (other than the new 10W7). If it fits... great!

jizzajuice: I would do that, but the passenger side cubby has the battery in it, and the driver side is where I plan on putting the 10lb nitrous bottle So, they are both taken Only place left to really conceal something that size would be that reat spare tire area...

Icemark: Yeah, I love the JL's always have. I'll check their website for all the depth specs and post what I find... but I could've sworn they were all the same or close....

So... any tips on laying the glass? I've never done it before on something this large... my only glass experience was patching holes and small body panels on a 67 vette about 10 years ago.

Depth specs as pulled off JLAudios datasheets:

First depth is from mouting depth(top mounting), second one is overall depth(bottom mounting)

10W0
5.375"
5.875"

10W1
4.375"
4.875"

10W3
5.8125"
6.4375"

10W6
4.875"
5.500"

Looks like they are different, the 10W1 being the shallowest... Now I remember why I wanted the 10W3, after looking at the datasheets. I'd completely forgotten that it is available as a Dual Voice Coil design... which is what I want/need. Looks like I'll be making room for close to 6" of interior depth clearance and .625+ cuft of volume... I'm sure that the volume will be easy to get, based on the size of the well, but the depth may end up being an issue... Oh well, once I can get pointed towarsds some decent tutorials about getting the glass laid, then I'll worry about depth... I should be able to fudge some extra since the covering for the tire is just the carpeting... might make for a slight bulge, but will probably not be noticeable....

I currently have a 2+2 but figure if I take out my rear seats I can make a custom bandpass setup there. Thats not too hard right? 3 equal separated spaces, correct? Put some plexiglass on top & done. Lol, I know it will not be that easy but still. Shouldn't have to be an expert. Just my 2.

I have to warn you ahead of time. I sealed everything up so there's not much to see in terms of how everything looks inside, but i'll try to take pics and describe what's going on inside.

Peace,
AJ ^_^

when building a bandpass box, it helps to be an expert. the box has to be tuned perfectly for your subs or it'll sound like crap. it takes a lot of time to calculate the right dimensions and the size and length of the ports. also, if you're going for a stealth look, there isn't enough room in the cubbies for a bandpass design. they require almost twice the size as a sealed application.
