Removable sub box for FD..??
Anyone with a removable box in an FD. I really want music in my FD, but i also do a lot of drag racing, and i'd like to try to stay around 2700 pounds on the dragstrip, Anyone with easily removable sub boxes? I know this makes me prone to theft, but thats not a big problem where i live. Any ideas. Maybe where the removable center piece is now, or in the spare tire well? THanks guys.

It's prolly not the ease of removal of the box that's the concern. You still have to consider all the connections - power, signal, speakers. They will have to be neatly dealt with. I guess you can get those XLR looking connectors like they use on demo board and make quick release connections. Otherwise, there'll be all those cable ends flopping about (definitely not a good idea).
WRT box, check out DamonB's box in this forum...looks very nice but will limit you to a low displacement 10".

removable stereos
there are actualy realy cool subs with boxes and amps built in made spicificly for certain cars and trucks that use storage compartments. They are made by MTX, i highly doubt they make one for the rx-7 family (although that would be a blessing), but im sure you could always find a shop to build something similar. Possibly a lightweight box with just enough air to support the speaker, small amplifier mounted to it.
The connections on the other hand can be tricky, or very simple.. you basicly have 5 wires, signal imput, (usualy rca), battery, ground and last but not least REM (or turn on). as long as the rca's stay seperated you dont have to worry abou them. With the power wire is the fun part, either you can tape it up everytime you disconnect or use a simple approach that im trying with my truck box, use an inline fuse, much like the one off the battery. you can disconnect (unscrew) the cable from the fuse to the amp, pull out the fuse, and leave the connecter on the other side of the fuse in the weather proof holder (which is obviously no longer weather proof), found this works rather well, give you a few more inches or progection for the cable ends.
Just pull the cables off to the side and you're set.
Sorry if this post is extensivly long and full of grammer errors, i dont care about spelling and i am very long winded this evening.

I'm familiar with installations, and my plan is to have a box thats removable, not amp rack etc. I'll just disconnect the speaker wire. The bulk of the weight is the sub, magnet structure, and box. The amps dont' ad nearly as much weight, and like all of you said, there are a lot more wires involved. I think i'll end up doing a single 12 in a fiberglass box where the spare tire is. But i'm still thinking about vinyl covered fiberglass with 2 10's mounted inverted with magnets towards the seats, but it would be more difficiult to make that removeable.
BTW, puma thats a sweet install you have done, but i don't need quite the bass of 2 12's especially in such a small car.

I was going to go w/ an IDMAX but I think I'm going to go w/ all Focal (Utopia) now. We're laying out the setup now. Looking at Helix for amps. *shrug* we'll see. It's a full custom job tho.... it's going to be a blast to build!
