"Re-Upholster" stock FD seats?? Anyone try before? Worth it??
hey all... ok, my '93 FD's tan seats are really starting to look bad these days, and i'm goin gto have to do something about them soon; i had thought about buying a set of mucho-expensive racing seats from R.E., but got thinking... i've always really liked the way the stock seats feel, could i possibly have them professionally recovered, perhaps in a different material than the original leather? anyone tried to do this before? i'm concerned about what kind of money would be involved, and whether it would be cheaper to have them recovered well than replaced. i've always envied the R1 owners w/ the nice suede seats, i assume that would probably cost a fortune though... any input from others who have fought w/ their nasty tan-leather seats? any other decent replacements i should be looking at as well? thx in advance all..

You can get a set of used R1 or base cloth seats for $400. Check this site and thepartstrader.com regularly.
A upholstry shop should be able to repair your touring seats. Sometimes if the color is just rubbing off, they can just spray it with paint. The factory seats are actually spray painted to get the tan color and it rubs off after a while. The alternative is to get a seat cover which is probably around $150 for really nice custom pairs.
Some one on the forum was selling Sparco seats for $400. It sounds like a good deal.

cool, thx for the speedy reply's friends... i am really wanting to go w/ red seats if i do any covering at all, so maybe the covers would be a good way to go... my only problem is that my FD has a backseat, and i'd want to have it recovered to match whatever went in... the only stock seats i really like are the suede numbers that came w/ some of the early FD's, and lately every set i've seen for sale has been kinda thrashed... i'll keep looking, thanks for the input guys, any more is welcome!

Ugh! Leather! Hate it, don't want it!
I would definitely look into re-covering it with some kind of suede fabric. It'll hold your butt tighter when you take a hard corner.
Most shops can custom tailor the fabric to your own color specifications. Say you wanted a red and black scheme, with red stitching, I'm pretty sure they can accomodate. And if you're in the mood, you can even embroider something on the headrest area. "RX-7" or "Twin Turbo" or "R1"/"R2" would look nice.
And I agree, with 2 years driving in the same seat, I'm accustomed to the stock seats. It provides enough support for me. And I'm looking to just re-cover it to match the interior/exterior.
Also, I don't think it's too expensive to match your rear seats with the two front. You can probably strike a deal with the shop for doing your whole interior. Money talks...just do ALOT of talking.

We ordered them at the same time and they were offering 2 tone for free (not the suede, just all leather). Mine is finished and in the inerior section with pics posted.
Call Jeremy at CFI (I think his extension is 107). Tell him that you were told by a guy who just purchased black leather that the 2 tone was free. I remember it was. you should pay 575 + 25 for the tool.

The stock seats are pretty supportive, but aftermarket seats will still keep you planted better in em.
Hey daiSho, don't forget that you can always simply get that ONE worn out section of the seat replaced. There is no need to have to redo the entire seat.

Sorry to bring this up from the dead but I'm considering doing this... anyone have good experiences with this? Especially converting an old leather FD seat to a cloth/suede one?
Please list the price you paid if you don't mind....

I'll be doing this in the future also.
I think your best bet is to call around your area, visit some shops and get some estimates. I would think that labor plays the bigger role in cost and that is highly dependent on where you live.

This is something I actually need to do myself. My drivers seat is so bad, it looks like it belongs in a junk yard. Passeners seat looks ok but is rock hard, and it just barley starting to tear. Does anybody have a write up on how to re-upholster both seats?

re-up
A friend of mine had his done with the leatherseats.com covers. They look and feel awesome. Go to their site, they have plenty of info, and are extremely helpful. They'll even send out samples if you can't choose a color. If you absolutely positively don't want leather, get the base black cloth seats, for the loot, they are a steal.
