question about sanding paint for re-spray

hey guy's

i just had a question, i am going to re-spray my montego blue fd with innocent blue mica. i want a complete re-spray and i was wondering (since i will do all the prepping myself), how or what method do you use to sand it? the shop told me that i cant sand it. they have to do it because they sand the clear and thats it. they said you cant go too far. is this true? i am having the complete car re-painted a diff color. would it be better to sand all the paint/clear off of it or what??

thanks for all the help!

It would be easier to just scuff (sand) the clear than go all the way down to bare metal. Of course the absolute best way is to go down to metal. You can do the sanding yourself, it shouldn't be a problem at all. I think most shops are scared to let customers do there own prepping cause they might not do it correctly causing paint defects. There might be a slight problem if you go through the clear but I don't see it as being a huge concern. The clear is pretty thick from the factory so I would only take it easy on corners, where clear usually thins at. The shop might be concerned with going through the clear because blue is one of those colors that is easy to bleed. Red is the worst bleeding color and I shot it fine with a bunch of primer spots. I just had to shoot 4 coats, not a big deal

The very first thing you should do is wash your car. Then use some type of wax/grease remover. This cleans off any wax/grease that might be gouged into the paint while sanding. Most people use 600grit. Make sure you wetsand btw. I would use 320grit for the jambs and enginebay but if you've got the stregnth for 600grit, go for it. Use sanding blocks whenever possible for straitness. Sand in strait lines with the body lines, not against it.

I heard that the paint adheres better if you don't go all the way down to bare metal.

The only time I think people goto bare metal is for a complete custom restoration.

If you look at Donny's thread...it looks like he just sands off the clear and "ruffs" up the paint so its ready for primer.

I just had my car repainted IBM, and they did not go down to bare metal.

It was "3" stage, with primer, paint, clear.

Here is my thread....more current pics are at the end...

Since the last pictures everything is back together including the 99 spec stuff.

I will post newer pics on Tuesday when I pick the car up.
