You'll know the replicas---look at the silver backing portion, and if it has a 'disco ball' pattern to it, they're knock offs.

ok after reading through threads and getting answers mostly from GoodfellaFD3S, ive found that the difference between oem and replica are:
replicas inside light casing .. or the white light .. look like "disco *****"
replicas have a serial number on the bottom inside corner
oems have a company name on the bottom center

nearly all the knock offs have HYPER SPORTS on the bottom of them. at the end of the day they work just fine, ive had 2 sets of copies in my original 99 spec bumper and fit and finish was second to none.

I disagree, I had a pair of knockoffs temporarily installed on my FD and I didn't like the cheap 'disco ball' effect at all. When they were off the car they looked alright, but once installed I thought they looked cheap. In my opinion it's worth the extra money to get the real thing

Nothing wrong with the cheap ebay knockoffs in my book. You won't catch me spending $300+ on turnlamps for a 13 year old mazda. I've had my cheapos for 3 years now, they haven't melted yet and are still doing a damn fine job letting other drivers know which way my 7 will be turning.

Merlin, your FD looks great, I never said it looked like ****
Can you take a closeup picture of the pieces in question head on? Maybe there are different styles of replicas out there.

Thanks for the compliments guys, she's still a work on progress. You can see the disco ball pattern Rich is talking about in this first blurry picture that I just took. The difference between these and the real '99s in the 2nd picture is the size of the reflector panels inside the housing. The knock-offs use lots of little ones and the real ones use much larger sized panels. Not a big enough difference IMHO, but your mileage may vary. I've also seen another set of knock-offs in person that were quite clearly horribly made. The orange wasn't as strongly colored and there was something funky going on with the reflector surface. He said he got those off ebay, but I can't remember the brand that was stamped on them.

Correct, the 2nd picture of the real '99s is from FDNewbie's website. I can also make out Stanley, but I don't know what the other word beside it is.
